2022 ATP Buenos Aires Information

The 2022 ATP Buenos Aires (Argentina Open) is a men’s tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It will mark the 25th edition of the ATP Buenos Aires event as a part of the ATP 250 series of the 2022 ATP Tour.

The tournament is set to kick off on Monday, February 7, and conclude on Sunday, February 13, with the grand finals.

The confirmed field of players at the 2022 ATP Buenos Aires will include three of the top-25 rated players in the world, including Casper Ruud (no.8), the defending champion, Diego Schwartzman (no.14) and Lorenzo Sonego (no.23), as the third seed.

Joining the top-seeded players are Fabio Fognini (no.31), Dušan Lajović (no.38), Federico Delbonis (no.41), Albert Ramos Viñolas (no.44), and Laslo Đere (no.49). Initially, the tournament was supposed to feature Dominic Thiem, but the Austrian tennis player had to withdraw with an injury and got replaced by the current no.92 in the ATP Rankings, Thiago Monteiro.

Casper Ruud

The top-seeded player of the 2022 Argentina Open, Casper Ruud, travels to Argentina, where he’ll attend his second singles tennis tournament of the year. The Norwegian tennis star was last seen competing in the ATP Cup in January, where he picked up a win against Lajovic (2-0) and Garin (0-2) but lost their remaining two bouts against Bautista-Agut (0-2),

Unfortunately, Ruud did not attend the 2022 Australian Open, so his mediocre performance at the ATP Cup is the only form guide we have on him. And suffice to say, it’s not looking good. Admittedly, he will face much easier opposition in Argentina, but lower-rated opponents don’t necessarily mean he’ll achieve much success.

Ruud definitely has the talent needed to go all the way and win his second Argentina Open title. Still, he might not be the best bet, as there are plenty of players more than capable of beating him on the Argentinian clay, including the home favorite, Diego Schwartzman.

Diego Schwartzman

The defending Argentina Open champion, Diego Schwartzman, will seek his second title on home clay this week. Schwartzman won the tournament in 2021 with a 2-0 sweep of his compatriot Francisco Cerúndolo and has made the finals in 2019 when he had to admit defeat to Marco Cecchinato (1-6, 2-6).

Although lower-rated than the 2020 champion, Schwartzman has enjoyed a solid start to the 2022 season. He picked up two wins in the ATP Cup – against Basilashvil (2-0) and Tsitsipas (2-1), but lost to Hurkacz. At the 2022 Australian Open, Schwartzman could only manage R2, where he lost to O’Connell (0-3), which isn’t the best look, but there is no hiding that Schwartzman performs much better on clay – as evident from his QF appearance at the 2021 French Open.

Schwartzman might have had a rocky start to the season, but it’s fair to expect great things from him in the 2022 Argentina Open.

Lorenzo Sonego

The third-seeded player Lorenzo Sonego might be a dark horse to win it all. The 26-year-old Italian has made QF in the Sydney International and had a solid showing at the 2022 Australian Open, where he beat Querrey (3-0), Otte (3-1), and narrowly lost to Kecmanovic (1-3) in R3.

Since then, Sonego also attended the Cordoba Open, where he made QF but had to admit defeat to the eventual finalist, Ramos-Vinolas (6-7, 5-7). Admittedly, Sonego has not achieved much at the highest level of play yet, but he has made the semi-finals of the Italian Open in 2021, and his run to the third round of the Australian Open is nothing to sneeze at either.

It’s also worth noting that Sonego has had solid showings in Argentina before. And considering the growth we saw from Sonego towards the end of 2021, and early into 2022, he is definitely one to keep an eye on.
