ATP 2022 Citi Open Odds Analysis, Betting Favorites, and Predictions

The ATP Washington Open (Citi Open) is an annual ATP 500 and WTA International tournament that takes place in Washington, D.C. at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. The men’s tournament is a little larger with a draw size of 48 singles, half of which have to qualify first. Qualification began this past weekend with last-chance players like Taro Daniel, Michael Mmoh, and Borna Gojo earning entry into the tournament.

While those players aren’t exactly household names, the 500 level event has attracted a relatively decent field as players gear up for the US Open later this month. Top-level players in the tournament include Andrey Rublev, Nick Kyrgios, and Hubert Hurkacz. Taylor Fritz is the betting favorite among American players – no American has won the tournament since Andy Roddick in 2007.

The tournament was first held in 1959. Past winners include Juan Martin del Potro (3), Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, and Alex Zverev (2). Italian rising star Jannik Sinner won the Citi Open in 2021. Is Rublev Getting Too Much Love?

Rublev is the betting favorite at +650 for the ATP Citi Open, but he hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire with his play as of late. The 24-year-old Russian wasn’t permitted to play at Wimbledon due to his nationality and hasn’t reached a final since. He last won the Serbia Open in April, defeating crowd favorite Novak Djokovic in the final.

However, Rublev lost his first round match in the Halle Open in June and, after reaching the semifinal in the Swedish Open, lost in the Round of 16 at the German Open.

Rublev is at his best on hard court, but hasn’t exactly proven himself worthy of the top billing here in Washington. Take his betting odds with a grain of salt.

Kyrgios Making Headlines Again

Nick Kyrgios has been relatively quiet in the tennis world, at least up until this year’s Wimbledon. The Aussie star put on a show both on and off the court at the All England Club, making headlines for both his play and antics during interviews – he may have even started a feud with the usually reserved Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Now, Kyrgios enters the Citi Open with the second shortest odds to win the tournament – one week after a late withdrawal from the Atlanta Open. Kyrgios won his first round doubles match with Thanasi Kokkinakis, but came out in front of the crowd during his scheduled first round singles match to announce his withdrawal.

“I just want to say that I’m extremely shattered that I’m not able to compete tonight,” Kyrgios said, citing a knee injury. “I’ve won this tournament once and, you know, I’m playing some of the best tennis of my career.”

Kyrgios will be a wildcard in the US Open and is clearly prioritizing his health with the hopes of playing in the fourth Grand Slam of the year. There’s no real guarantee he plays in Washington, but he’s deservedly a favorite if he does.
