The Favourites
- Novak Djokovic (+167)
Seeing Novak Djokovic priced as the main favorite to win the 2022 Australian Open shouldn’t surprise anyone. The Serb was by far the best player of 2021, having won three Grand Slam tournaments, and he came very close to completing the collection; however, he fell flat in the U.S. Open, where he got outmatched by Daniil Medvedev in the finals (4-6, 4-6, 4-6).
Even though everyone is talking about how Djokovic failed to win his fourth Grand Slam of the year, it’s difficult to ignore just how dominant he was overall. Admittedly, he also fell flat in the ATP World Tour Finals, losing to Zverev in the semis, but Djokovic is still the most decorated tennis player in the world.
Beyond the incredible form, he showed last season, Djokovic is also the most successful tennis player at the Australian Open in the Open Era. He has won nine titles in Australia and three consecutive between 2019-2021.
- Daniil Medvedev (+320)
Daniil Medvedev seemed like the only player to be able to match Djokovic last season and has caught a lot of attention with his incredible performance in the U.S. Open, denying the Serb his fourth Grand Slam of the year.
But winning the U.S. Open was not Medvedev’s only achievement of the season. He has also reached the finals of the Australian Open (for the first time in his career), made quarters in France, and secured his career-best placement in Wimbledon (R4).
2021 was a breakthrough year for Medvedev, and while it’s anyone’s guess whether he can improve further in 2022, there is no denying he should be considered as a threat for the 2022 Australian Open title.
- Alexander Zverev (+560)
Alexander Zverev is priced as the third favorite to win the 2022 Australian Open, which is more than fair. The German tennis star has been phenomenal in 2021 and was particularly impressive towards the end of the season.
Even though Zverev has yet to win a Grand Slam, he came close several times. In 2021, Zverev reached the quarter-finals in Australia and two semi-finals in France and the United States.
Even in Wimbledon, he performed well. He reached R4, which marked his career-best placement and his deepest run at the tournament since 2017.
But while he has had solid showings in Grand Slam tournaments, Zverev’s most notable achievement was winning his second ATP Finals. He won his first title in 2018, when he beat Djokovic, and added his second in November, with a 2-0 sweep of Medvedev.
Djokovic, Medvedev, and Zverev have been a class above the rest for most of the 2021 season, and we expect them to keep that status heading into 2022.
