The ATP Tour returns to the clay this week, as the Nordea Open takes place in Bastad, Sweden. This event is a 250 level event, but comes with a strong field as players look to earn some points on the clay after a grass season that is typically difficult on clay courters. Headlined by a finalist at this year’s French Open, the Nordea Open promises to be one of the better 250 events of the 2022 tour season. That said, let’s take a closer look at the upcoming event so you can get all set to make your bets against the ATP Betting Lines.
Tennis Betting Preview for the 2022 Nordea Open Tournament
2022 Nordea Open Field
The top two seeds at this year’s Nordea Open are Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev, both of whom have done well on clay in their careers. Ruud is coming off of a trip to the French Open final this year, where he lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal. Rublev, meanwhile, has not been his best in 2022, but still packs enough power in his forehand to be the favorite in most of the matches that he plays.
Seeded third and fourth at this year’s Nordea Open are Diego Schwartzman and Roberto Bautista-Agut. Schwartzman is the platonic ideal of a clay court specialist, as his lack of size and lack of big groundstrokes are made up for by his incredible defense on this slower surface. Bautista-Agut is more of an all-surface player, and cannot be counted out here despite the field consisting of several more gifted players on clay.
One more seeded player worth keeping an eye on at this tournament is Holger Rune, who was the breakout star of this year’s clay season in Europe. Rune is just 19 years old, and still has a lot to learn, but he clearly has the game on clay to make deep runs at tournaments already. After going out meekly at Wimbledon, Rune will be thrilled to get back to action on his preferred surface.
Nordea Open History
The Swedish Open has been going on since before the start of the Open Era, with the first edition of the tournament taking place in 1948. Since then, Swedish stars like Bjorn Borg and Robin Soderling have claimed the title, as well as Spanish stars like Rafa Nadal and David Ferrer. But this tournament has become less predictable over the last few years, as the late stages of several top players have seen them come to Bastad less often, opening the door for younger talent.
Last year, Casper Ruud claimed the title at this tournament, as he defeated Federico Coria in straight sets in the final. Ruud had a history of running through the competition at 250 level clay events in 2021, and this was one of the many stops where he did that. He is the favorite to get the job done in Bastad again this year.
2022 Nordea Open Outright Picks
When it comes to picking a winner in Bastad, it is hard to pick anyone other than Casper Ruud at this event. Ruud is one of the few highly ranked players that continues to give his all at 250 level events, especially on clay. His outright price does not have a lot of value, but he should be one of the final players left when this event gets to the latter stages.
For bettors looking for a little more value, Holger Rune is a name worth keeping an eye on, as he has been one of the more impressive clay courters in 2022. Rune might not be able to take out Ruud at this stage of his career. But if someone can do that for him, Rune could easily beat anyone else at this tournament on the dirt.
