Rafael Nadal Out
Rafael Nadal has decided to not travel to England to compete at Wimbledon. As one of the best players in the scene, his absence will be noticeable, as it will significantly reduce the firepower and star presence at All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.
The two-time Wimbledon champion, Nadal, was the first to announce that he’ll be skipping the event, citing injury concerns. He has won the tournament in 2008 and 2010 and has made it to the semi-finals in 2018 and 2019.
Besides skipping the third Grand Slam of the season, Nadal will also miss the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The decision follows, after Nadal’s statement that two weeks between the end of clay season and the start of the grass-court season wasn’t enough for him to recover.
However, he is just a portion of a growing list of players who have opted against competing at the grass Grand Slam for numerous factors.
Naomi Osaka Needs to recover “Mentally”
Naomi Osaka joins Nadal as another star player to skip Wimbledon. Unlike the Spaniard, who cited injury concerns, Osaka has opted against traveling to the third Grand Slam tennis tournament of the season to “recover mentally.”
As stated by world no.2, she had been struggling with anxiety and depression for the past two years. That led to her withdrawal from the French Open, where she also opted against doing the mandatory press conferences. Osaka has, however, announced that she would attend the Tokyo Olympics.
Simona Halep Out With an Injury
On the day of the Wimbledon draw, Simona Halep unveiled that she won’t be traveling to Wimbledon due to a calf injury. She had earlier missed the 2021 French Open due to the same issues.
It’s an unfortunate situation for the 29-year old Romanian, who will miss two Grand Slams where she has been the most successful. She had won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.
“I can honestly say that I’m really down and upset about having to take this decision,” said Halep.
“This period has been difficult, but to miss the last two Majors has made it even more challenging mentally and physically. We will see what the future holds, but I’m hoping it will make me a stronger person and athlete.”
Dominic Thiem Joins the List
Dominic Thiem has become the latest tennis star who has announced he is pulling out of Wimbledon. He announced his decision on Thursday, June 24, after consulting with doctors in Barcelona, who advised him to skip the next three tournaments while he recovers from an injury.
As revealed by world no.5, he will have to wear a wrist splint for five weeks to help him recover from a wrist injury he had suffered in the opening match in Mallorca.
With Thiem, Osaka, Halep, and Nadal out of the tournament, the Wimbledon betting odds have seen some drastic shifts. With Osaka opting to withdraw, Ashleigh Barty has now emerged as the odds-on favorite at +500.
On the other side, Novak Djokovic has further solidified his position as the man to beat, with his odds drifting from +130 to -115. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was priced as the fifth favorite only a week ago (+800), is now the second favorite to win his first Grand Slam at +550.
