2022 Australian Open Betting News and Updates | January 20th Edition
Murray Gets Eliminated
The former world no.1, Andy Murray, suffered a devastating defeat on the Australian tennis courts on Thursday, January 20, when he lost against the Japanese tennis star Taro Daniel in straight sets. Priced as a massive underdog, at odds as high as +275, Daniel will go down in history as the lowest-rated opponent to beat Murray at a Grand Slam.
Daniel won the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to lock in a crucial win that sees the world no.120 tennis player advance into R3 for the first time of his career. Prior to 2022, his best performance at the Australian Open came in 2019, when he made it to the second round but lost against Denis Shapovalov with 3-6, 6-7, 3-6.
Meanwhile, for Murray, the premature exit marks the third consecutive time he has not made it past R4. Over the past six years, Murray has attended only three Australian Open tournaments and could only manage R4 in 2017, R1 in 2019, and has now added another early exit.
With this win, Daniel booked an R3 clash against Jannik Sinner, who made it past Steve Johnson in R2 with 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. It will mark Daniel’s first head-to-head meeting with Sinner.
Dan Evans Into Round Three
Dan Evans reached the third round of the 2022 Australian Open over Arthur Rinderknech without ever touching the ball due to the French tennis player’s withdrawal from the tournament. As reported, Rinderknecht has suffered a wrist injury and was unable to continue competing at the first Grand Slam of the year.
With that, Evans, who comfortably won against David Goffin, is through to the last 32, for the first time since 2017, when he reached his career-best R4, but had to admit defeat against Jo Tsonga (7-6, 2-6, 4-6, 4-6).
In Round 3 of the Australian Open, Evans will clash with world no.9, Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had to work for over four hours (4:23) to make it past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday, with 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.
The duo will clash on Saturday, January 22, at 11:00 local time (AEDT), for the second time in history and the first time since February 2021, when Evans won 2-0.
The current ATP betting markets show the two tennis players priced at even odds, suggesting we could be in for a close match. Although you could favor the higher-rated Auger-Aliassime, the fatigue could be the difference-maker here.
While Felix Auger-Aliassime had to battle for nearly four and a half hours to reach this tournament stage, Evans has been resting since his 3-0 victory against Goffin on Tuesday. Still, with two more days to go before they meet, it’s fair to assume both tennis players will be well-rested and ready to put on a show.
