We’re still a few weeks away from the start of the 2022 ATP season, but even without knowing what the next season will bring, we can safely say that the 2022 tennis season will be an explosive one. Many young talents have emerged as strong contenders in 2021, and some of the world’s greats have proven that they can bleed, suggesting we could be in for a few shakeups in 2022.

And while the 2021 season as a whole was exciting, the 2021 ATP Finals heavily changed the way we look ahead to the next season, setting the tone for what to expect next term. Let’s jump right into action so you can plan your bets against the ATP Odds.

What to Expect of Next Years Grand Slams

In With The Young, Out With The Old

The 2021 season and the results we were presented with suggested that 2022 just might be the year when we see the change of the old guard. But while the entire season featured the rise of younger tennis stars, even those who did not believe in less experienced players likely changed their mind after the 2021 ATP Finals.

It’s more than fair to say that the 2021 ATP Finals heavily impacted how the 2022 season will play out. Most notably, we saw Novak Djokovic fail in his attempt to win another ATP Final title when he lost against Alexander Zverev.

Zverev Eliminates Djokovic From 2021 ATP Finals 

In a match that Djokovic was expected to dominate and win his second ATP Final title, the Serbian tennis star soon found himself with his back against the wall. Admittedly, he hasn’t won the tournament since 2018 in London, but his three Grand Slam titles over the 2021 season suggested that Djokovic is in prime form to compete for the trophy.

Unlike Djokovic, Zverev did not win a single Grand Slam in 2021 and hasn’t been nearly as successful as the current no.1 on the ATP Ladder. However, the 24-year-old German has shown immense growth over the year.

With a QF appearance at the Australian Open, R4 exit in Wimbledon, and two semi-finals at the French Open and the U.S. Open, 2021 marked Zverev’s best season to date. Of course, that wasn’t as shocking knowing that he had made the finals of the U.S. Open in 2020, but it was still impressive to see the German keep his wheels spinning into 2021.

The two tennis stars clashed in the semi-finals of the ATP Final 2021 in November, and it soon became apparent that Zverev has what it takes to cause some damage. He edged out a win in the first set with 7-6 but then failed to deliver in the second set, losing 4-6.

Despite the minor setback, Zverev found his stride in the third and final set to eliminate Djokovic with 6-3, proving to the world that not only is he a world-class tennis player, but most importantly that Djokovic is beatable.

Zverev would then win the whole tournament, beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 in the grand finals, setting himself up nicely to compete for the top marks in 2021.

Can Zverev Win His Maiden Grand Slam In 2022?

Due to Zverev’s phenomenal performance at the 2021 ATP Finals, it’s fair to start questioning whether he can win a Grand Slam in 2022. Unfortunately, that’s tougher to answer than expected.

Over his entire career, Zverev has managed only one Grand Slam finals appearance in the 2020 U.S. Open, and he hasn’t reached further than QF until then. However, despite his lack of success over the last seven years, Zverev’s improvement in 2021 suggests he could be a strong contender in 2022.

We don’t know how the 2022 season will play out and what Zverev’s form will be heading into his ninth season, but it’s fair to feel optimistic about his chances to impress.

Zverev Odds To Win The 2022 Australian Open

The 2022 season will kick off in January with the 2022 Australian Open, which promises an exciting battle between Djokovic, Medvedev, and Zverev as the three favorites to lift the trophy.

Despite his slip-up at the 2021 ATP Final, Djokovic is priced as the top favorite (+151), with the 2021 U.S. Open champion Medvedev (+275) priced in second, and Zverev (+460) as the third-most likely to win the title.

Admittedly, Djokovic is the most successful Open Era player in Melbourne, but he lost to Zverev in November and couldn’t match Medvedev in the United States. So even though a couple of matches don’t mean much, there is a good chance we could see a surprise winner in Australia.

Given how the 2021 season played out, the results posted at the 2022 Australian Open will heavily impact how we view the rest of the 2022 ATP season. If Djokovic wins another title, we will go back to believing that maybe a day will come when the younger stars will take over, whereas a surprise title run from Zverev, Medvedev, or any other rising stars, could spell the end of an era we know.
