The second round of the 2023 French Open has now concluded, with both the men’s and women’s matches set for the third round. The first week of action has given us some great matches and notable upsets, including world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev losing to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round. 

Another top player in the men’s draw – Jannik Sinner – went down in a major upset on Thursday. Daniel Altmaier beat the young Italian 6-7 (7), 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Alex De Minaur, the 18th seed, also lost on Thursday, leaving the bottom quarter of the draw wide open for the likes of Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric, or Frances Tiafoe. 

Other notable third-round matches in the men’s and women’s draws include Lorenzo Musetti vs. Cam Norrie, Carlos Alcaraz vs. Denis Shapovalov, Elena Rybakina vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Elise Mertens vs. Jessica Pegula.

Although he’s outside of the top-100, Kokkinakis is 25-12 this season, including 8-4 on clay. He’s coming off of an emotional, five-set victory over Stan Wawrinka in the second round and has an opportunity to build upon that early Friday.

Khachanov beat Kokkinakis 7-5, 6-4 in the first round in Monte Carlo in 2018, but the Australian is a much better all-around player now than he was then.

Cam Norrie (+143) vs. Lorenzo Musetti (-184)

Lorenzo Musetti beat Cam Norrie in their only matchup earlier this season in Spain, but it was in three sets. This one projects to be a back-and-forth battle that could go five sets. Norrie, who has reached the third round at Roland Garros for the third consecutive year, is looking to get into the fourth round for the first time. Norrie is 18-6 on clay this season after wins over Lucas Pouille and Benoit Paire in the last two rounds.

Musetti, meanwhile, is just 11-8 on clay this year and has arguably had an easier path to the third round, beating Mikael Ymer and Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets. He may be unprepared for what should be a hard-fought battle against Norrie.

Yulia Putinseva (+148) vs. Sloane Stephens (-191)

Sloane Stephens is enjoying somewhat of a career renaissance at the French Open. The American has just dropped seven games through her first two matches and beat 16th seed Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-4 in the first round. She hasn’t had a great season prior to Roland Garros, and it’s unlikely she goes on a deep run.
