US Open: 1st Week Recap Analysis - ATP & WTA Betting

With the first week of the 2020 US Open nearly complete and the second week of action quickly approaching, let’s take a look at what’s gone down in both portions of the event so far this season and what could lie ahead so you can make your bets for this upcoming week against their Tennis odds.

ATP & WTA US Open Analysis | Week 1

ATP Portion

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic needed four set to get past Kyle Edmund in the second round and now he’ll take on Jan Lenard-Struff in the third round. Barring a monumental upset, Djokovic will then meet the winner of the Pablo Carreno Busta/Richard Berankis third round matchup.

I like No. 7 seed David Goffin to eventually meet up with the winner of the Dennis Shapovalov/Taylor Fritz clash in the fourth round before escaping to meet Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Goffin is no lock with both, Shapovalov and Fritz playing solid tennis right now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shapovalov reach the quarters opposite The Djoker.

No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem is going to have his hands full getting past former U.S. Open winner Marin Cilic in the third round with the winner likely facing talented Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev has looked great in winning his first two matches in straight sets as he looks to reach the finals in consecutive years

However, the player I have my eye on right now is world No. 5 and fifth-seeded Alex Zverev. The sweet-swinging German needed four sets to get past veteran Kevin Anderson in the first round, but then he dropped the hammer on Brandon Nakashima in four sets in the second round. I also suggest keeping an eye on the rising Vasek Pospisil. The world No. 94 is back to playing like a Top 20 player and has looked fantastic in dispatching Philip Kohlschreiber in straight sets and No. 25 seed Milos Raonic, in four sets.

WTA Portion

On the women’s side, my upset pick, Greek No. 15 seed Maria Sakkari has a huge match on her hands in the third round against American and No. 22 seed Amanda Anisimova and if she gets past that, will face the winner of the Serena Williams/Sloane Stephens third round clash. Sakkari dispatched Williams at the Western & Southern Open, so, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the blossoming big-hitter advance to the quarters. Three-time major winner and 2016 U.S. Open champ, No. 17 seed Angelique Kerber is looming and will face the winner of the Caroline Garcia/Jennifer Brady third round matchup, though both, Garcia and Brady are playing out of their respective minds at the moment.

I’m already penciling in two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova into the quarters. After getting past American Jessica Pegula, Kvitova will take on the winner of the all-American matchup between Madison Brengle and Shelby Rogers. No. 2 seed Sofia Kenin is playing well and looking like a virtual lock to reach the quarters if she gets past reinvigorated, two-time Aussie Open winner and former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka in what looks like a sure-fire third round meeting. As it stands right now, I like Kerber, Sakkari and Kenin to reach the semis with one spot clearly up for grabs.
