Kyrgios Takes Down Medvedev Again

There’s no question that Nick Kyrgios is having the best season of his career. The talented but frustrating Aussie has seemingly refocused his game and attitude (somewhat) this year, and it’s paying dividends. He reached a Grand Slam final for the first time this year at Wimbledon and is now through to the quarters at the US Open.

Kyrgios defeated world No. 1 Medvedev 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and made it look even easier than anticipated. It’s the second time he’s defeated the Russian this summer. Kyrgios was at +1000 to win the US Open before the tournament and now has the second-shortest odds to win the event. He’ll meet Karen Khachanov, who defeated Pablo Carreno Busta on Sunday, in the quarter-finals Tuesday.

Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud play in Tuesday’s other highly-anticipated quarter-final.

Garcia vs Gauff

While there’s been some great matches and notable upsets, there has yet to be a match that has a heavyweight feel on the women’s draw. Caroline Garcia vs Coco Gauff, however, has the potential to be the match of the tournament. The two players meet in one of two quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Garcia, a two-time doubles Grand Slam champion, has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title but is playing the best tennis of her career. She won the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati before the US Open and has already defeated Alison Riske and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu. Garcia hasn’t dropped a set through four matches and has a combined record of 48-20 through 68 games.

Gauff, meanwhile, is displaying the skills that had so many people claiming she’s the next breakout star in tennis as far back as two years ago. The 18-year-old American also hasn’t dropped a set but has had a slightly easier route to the quarter-finals. She did score an impressive win over Madison Keys in the third round, however.

Gauff is 2-0 against Garcia and last defeated the French player in February in Qatar.

Ons Jabeur and Alja Tomljanovic, who took out Serena Williams, meet in the other quarter-final on Tuesday.
