Djokovic, Medvedev, and Nadal Expected To Shine

Novak Djokovic (-145), Daniil Medvedev (+450), and Rafael Nadal (+700) are priced as the main betting favorites for the 2021 U.S. Open. Although all highly talented players, there is still a wide gap between Djokovic and the remaining two.

Seeing Djokovic priced as the man to beat shouldn’t surprise anyone who has been following tennis in 2021. The Serbian tennis superstar has been by far the most successful player on tour and has results to back those claims up.

He has already won the 2021 Australian Open, 2021 French Open, and the 2021 Wimbledon and is now only one Grand Slam title away from completing the collection. What’s more, a win in New York City would also mark his 21st Grand Slam title, cementing Djokovic as the most successful player in history.

However, he still needs to prove his worth in a fairly stacked field, headlined by Medvedev and Nadal. The Russian is enjoying his most successful season to date and is rightfully priced as the second-favorite to lift the trophy.

He has reached the final in Australia and made it to the quarter-finals in France. Although he hasn’t delivered in Wimbledon (R4 exit), Medvedev is still a serious threat for the U.S. Open title, mainly due to his impressive record on hard courts (73.13% career win rate).

Talking about strong performances on hard courts, Nadal is miles ahead of the competition, boasting a career win rate of 79.52%. What’s more, he is 6/2 on hard courts on the year and 19/5 across the last two.

If we look further back, Nadal hasn’t lost more than ten hard-court matches on the season once in his career. His worst season on hard courts was 2016, when he still won 21/10 fixtures. Since then, he has managed 38/8 in 2017, 14/3 in 2018, 25/3 in 2019, and 13/3 in 2019.

Osaka, Barty and Williams Ahead Of The Competition

The defending U.S. Open Champion, Naomi Osaka (+300), travels to New York City as the main betting favorite and a player who is expected to emulate her success from 2020. That seems reasonable; however, she hasn’t achieved anything since winning the 2021 Australian Open.

The Japanese tennis player withdrew from the French Open and Wimbledon and hasn’t impressed anyone at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics either. Still, she is a very efficient hard-court player (66.91% career win rate) and is 15/4 on the year.

Her strong hard-court performances extend across the last three years, seeing how Osaka managed  16/3 in 2020, and 29/7 in 2019. But even those numbers aren’t that much better than what Ashleigh Barty (+650) has produced.

The current no.1 in the world averages a 73.3% career win rate on hard courts and is 15/4 on the year. What’s more, she has managed a combined 46/13 records on hard courts across the last three years and ended 2020 with an equally impressive 12/3.

And yet, neither of the two come even close to Serena Williams (+800), who has won 84.72% of hard-court matches since 1997. Obviously, Williams isn’t as dominant as she once was; however, she is still extremely efficient on her favorite surface.

Williams’s record on hard courts shows 19/5 in 2019, 15/4 in 2020, and 9/2 in 2021. Her first hard-court defeat of the year happened in the semi-finals in Melbourne, where Williams withdrew against Barty, while she had to admit defeat against Osaka (3-6, 4-6) in the semi-finals of the 2021 Australian Open.
