The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati is the last stop before the US Open and gives players one last chance to build momentum before the final Grand Slam of the season. It’s an ATP Masters 1000 event with a 56-player draw.

First played more than 100 years ago at the Avondale Athletic Club, the tournament is now held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Defending champion Alexander Zverev is noticeably absent from the tournament, although the draw does feature past champions Daniil Medvedev (2019), Gregor Dmitrov (2017), and Rafael Nadal (2013), the latter of whom is competing in his first tournament since withdrawing from his scheduled semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. Nadal Back from Injury

Nadal battled through an abdominal injury in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and actually secured his spot in the semifinals, before being forced to withdraw from the tournament. He was scheduled to compete at last week’s National Bank Open Presented by Rogers, but withdrew at the last minute.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is cautiously optimistic about his health in advance of the Western & Southern Open.

“Of course, I had a small tear in the abdominal so it’s dangerous. The abdominal is the place that is dangerous because in every serve you put a lot of effort there, so I need to take things a little bit easier and do the highs the proper way,” he told The Guardian. “That’s what I’m trying to do. Try to be a little more conservative but I hope I can be ready to play.”

The Young Guns

Carlos Alcaraz (+600) and Jannik Sinner (+1400) are both among the top five betting favorites to win the Western & Southern Open and deservedly so. Both players have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but have been unable to win when it matters most. A victory by either one here would vault them up the betting list for the upcoming US Open.

Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz to win the Croatia Open earlier this season, recently lost in the Round of 16 to Pablo Carreno Busta at the National Bank Open. He had a two-set lead on Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, before dropping three consecutive sets to the Serbian star.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, has also been in a bit of a slump. He lost to Sinner in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon (and in the finals of the Croatia Open) and then lost his first round match to underdog Tommy Paul at the National Bank Open.

Possible First-Round Upsets

The first round gets underway at 10 a.m. EST on Monday with Brandon Nakashima facing Aslan Karatsev. While there’s possible upsets in every match, the one that stands out is Frances Tiafoe (+162) against Matteo Berrettini (-200).

Although Berrettini reached the finals of the Swiss Open in July, he lost his first round match at the National Bank Open and has been fairly inconsistent this season. Tiafoe has been competitive in most matches and should present an early test for Berrettini.

Dan Evans (-175) should have a tough time with Filip Krajinovic (+137) as well. Evans, a 32-year-old English player, has played a lot of tennis as of late. He reached the semifinals and finals in singles and doubles at the National Bank Open and was a quarterfinalist in singles and doubles at the Citi Open.
