Qualifiers are ongoing and the 2022 Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club begin June 27. It is the third Grand Slam of the season and the only to be played on grass.
The 135th edition of the oldest tennis tournament in the world should be interesting on both the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ draws with many different storylines that will impact results. There’s heavy Wimbledon Betting favorites in both draws, while some of the best players in the world will miss the tournament.

Serena Williams Returns
Serena Williams hasn’t played a singles match on the WTA Tour since last year’s Wimbledon, where she withdrew from her first-round match. She is, however, playing in the Eastbourne International’s doubles draw alongside Ons Jabeur.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, is 40 years old and has been away for far too long to expect to contend for a Grand Slam championship. It would be a great story if she were to win a few matches and possibly reach the quarter- or semi-finals, but there’s so many good players to contend with.
Iga Swiatek, for instance, is the overwhelming favorite to win the Ladies’ Draw at this year’s Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Polish star and world No. 1 has already won six singles titles this season and has a record-tying 35-match win streak. This is her tournament to lose.
No Russians or Belarussians
Following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, Wimbledon announced it wouldn’t allow Russian or Belarussian players to participate in this year’s tournament. It hasn’t walked back on that stance, despite the US Open announcing it would welcome players from those countries. ATP and WTA Tour events leading up to Wimbledon also accepted Russian and Belarussian players.
The Ladies’ draw won’t be impacted too much as the top five players in the world should participate barring injury. Aryna Sabalenka, world No. 6, and Daria Kasatkina, world No. 12, will be the notable absences.
The biggest absence, however, will be ATP world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The 2021 US Open winner would have been a favorite to win the Gentlemen’s draw.
Interestingly, doubles specialist Natela Dzalamidze changed her nationality from Russian to Georgian and will be able to compete alongside Serbian partner Aleksandra Krunić.
Djokovic Chasing Nadal
Novak Djokovic, the betting favorite for the Gentlemen’s draw, is now two Grand Slam titles behind Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open and Australian Open this year. Djokovic is dominant at Wimbledon, having won three of the last championships, and should be especially motivated to move one Grand Slam back of Nadal.
Nadal, meanwhile, is looking to become only the sixth player, male or female, to win the calendar Grand Slam. He hasn’t won Wimbledon since 2010, however.
The other member of the Big 3, Roger Federer, is still recovering from surgery and is expected to miss Wimbledon.
