Fourth-seeded reigning champ Sofia Kenin got bounced out of the Aussie Open in the second round in swift fashion, 6-3, 6-2 against 35-year-old world No. 65 Kaia Kanepi. 2019 US Open champion and eighth-seeded Bianca Andreescu was sent home after a straight-sets loss against Su-Wei Hsieh. Two-time major champion and No. 9 seed Petra Kvitova was dispatched in the second round in three sets by Sorana Cristea.

Top-seeded world No.1 Ashleigh Barty has struggled mildly in her opening two matches and fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina has had two tough matches as well. No. 14 seed Garbine Muguruza has looked fantastic in winning her two opening matches while 15th-seeded Iga Swiatek looks even more formidable. Second-seeded Simona Halep needed three sets to get past Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.
Surprise Contenders

33-year-old veteran Sara Errani has looked as gritty as ever in dispatching Georgina Garcia Perez in the qualifying round before getting past No. 30 seed Qiang Wang in a three-set thriller after dropping the opening set. Errani then got past an injured Venus Williams 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and could get past Su Wei Hsieh in the third round.
19th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova came back from a set down to win her opener and got past unheralded qualifier Canadian Rebecca Marino in the second round. I can definitely see her getting past Sorana Cristea in the third round.
Dark Horses
World No. 69 Ann Li has surprised nicely. In her opener, she upset No. 31 seed Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-0 before dispatching veteran Alize Cornet 6-2, 7-6 (8) in the second round. Next up is seventh-seeded Aryna Sabalenka who had a fight on her hands in the second round before getting past Daria Kastinka.
