Ash Barty’s sudden retirement from professional tennis propelled Iga Swiatek to the top of the WTA rankings, where the Polish star is expected to remain for a while longer. She was not as good as Barty, but Swiatek was the clear second-best, and there was no player more deserving of the top ranking.

The 20-year-old is also in exceptional form. She travels to France with a 32-3 record in the year, which includes four titles.

Swiatek won three consecutive titles on hard courts, including the Sunshine Double – WTA 1000 Indian Wells and Miami. By winning the Sunshine Double, Swiatek also became the fourth player and the youngest to claim it, after Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, and Victoria Azarenka.

She also won in Stuttgart, where Swiatek reeled four straight wins, including a 6-2, 6-2 against Aryna Sabalenka. And if her form is not enough to convince you that Swiatek is the most likely victor in France, she had already won here in 2020.

Simona Halep

Simona Halep is the second favorite to win the French Open title, even though she is ranked well outside the Top-20. But there is a good reason for that.

Most notably, Halep partnered with Patrick Mouratoglou, who has spent years as Serena Williams’ head coach and is definitely the guy to help Halep elevate her game. The pair started working together at the end of April, and the results were instant – as he helped Halpe to a strong start to Madrid Open.

With a new head coach, Halep is a threat, even though it’s impossible to say how well she’ll perform in France. Still, we would keep an eye out for her.

Barbora Krejcikova

Barbora Krejcikova was more known for her performances in doubles rather than singles, but she stunned the world last year when she won the 2021 French Open. It marked her first Grand Slam title in just her fifth major appearance, and it set the bar for what to expect from Krejcikova this season.

Most importantly, Krejcikova quickly proved that her performance at the last year’s French Open wasn’t a fluke as she then reached R4 of Wimbledon and QF of the U.S. Open. Moreover, she started the 2022 season with a QF finish in Australia.

But Krejcikova has been missing from action since March, when she withdrew from Indian Wells with an elbow injury. As a result, this year, Krejcikova holds a 9-4 record, and her last match was R16 exit from Qatar Open to Jelena Ostapenko. So betting on Krejcikova does seem appealing, but there are many question marks.

Most importantly, there is a world where Krejcikova decides not to attend. And even if she does, her lack of match play is concerning, making her title-defense run a less likely outcome.
