UFC Fight Island: Recap of all events

Written by on July 28, 2020

As we look ahead to the next UFC event, it’s never a bad idea to look back at what just went down. The results of previous events can have an impact on rankings within each weight class, which puts pressure on fighters looking to move up the rankings in upcoming bouts. Last weekend, we were treated to another evening of entertainment with Fight Island 3. It was a jam-packed main card and we are going to take some time to go back over each of the fights to bring you up to date on what went down so you can plan ahead and place your bets for the next fight against their MMA odds.

UFC Fight Island: Recap of all events

Khazmat Chimaev defeats Rhys McKee

We have a new contender in the welterweight division, as Chimaev absolutely looks like the real deal after just 2 fights in his UFC career. He came bolting out of the starting gate and had McKee on the mat in a matter of seconds. From there, he hammered down a ridiculous array of blows, not allowing his opponent off the floor for almost the full 3 minutes that that fight lasted. I think we are going to see the UFC start to really push Chimaev into higher profile battles.

Alex Oliveira defeats Peter Sobotta

While this one went the full 3 rounds, it was very much a one-sided affair that had a couple of stops along the way, including an inadvertent eye poke that grounded Sobotta for a minute. Oliveira was able to avoid numerous takedown attempts from his opponent, landing numerous brutal kicks on his way to a UD victory.

Paul Craig defeats Gadzhimurad Antigulov

Craig came tearing out of his corner to get at Antigulov, but he ended up getting taken down at about the 30-second mark. It was Craig, though, who looked the stronger on the mat, getting the upper hand and putting Antigulov in a triangle choke. His opponent battled hard to get free, but Craig was able to strengthen the hold and force Antigulov to tap out. A very decent win for the Scotsman.

Carla Esparza defeats Marina Rodriguez

There was an awful lot at stake in the strawweight bout, as the winner would certainly be taking one step closer to a title bout. This ended up being a bit of a come from behind win for Esparza, as she was cut by an elbow and lost the first round. She used her ground game to become dominant in the final two rounds, coming away with the win by decision.

Fabricio Werdum defeats Alexander Gustafsson

This looked to be an interesting fight, with Gustafsson moving up t heavyweight for the first time and facing a former title holder in Werdum. It looked like an interesting matchup, but it was one that did not end up lasting very long, with the former champ getting Gustafsson on the mat at the second attempt and never letting him up again.

Shogun Rua Vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

This was the third meeting between these two fighters, with Shogun winning the previous two. It ended up being a tight bout with not a lot of action to speak about. This was one that could really have gone either way, but a late burst by Shogun in the third and final round, where he controlled Nogueira on the mat swayed a couple of the judges, giving him the win by split decision.

Robert Whittaker defeats Darren Till

Another huge bout as the headliner, as the winner of this one appears to be on a date with destiny with the winner of the Adesanya/Costa fight in September. It did not take Till long to get rolling, knocking down Whittaker with an elbow in the opening round. Whittaker rebounded nicely and knocked down Till in the second. The fight went back and forth from that point on, but a brutal blow from Whittaker in the 5th opened a gash on Till, which seemed to swing things in his direction and give him the UD win.
