2022 US Open Odds Update: Djokovic Forced to Withdraw, Jessica Pegula Great Betting Pick

We’re finally just a few days from the start of the US Open, which is one of the most exciting times of the year if you’re a fan of all sports. The end of August not only signals the start of tennis’ fourth Grand Slam but also means playoff baseball is right around the corner, and the NFL, NBA, and NHL are close to beginning.

However, for the next two weeks, all the focus is on the players competing at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center. The field is pretty wide open for both the men and women. Let’s get into it so you can all set to make your bets against the US Open Betting Odds.

Djokovic Officially Out

After weeks of drama, Novak Djokovic is officially out of the US Open. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was still the betting favorite up until being forced to withdraw due to his vaccination status.

Djokovic was unable to play at the Australian Open in January for the same reason. Some pundits, including John McEnroe, think it’s a little absurd that Djokovic can’t add to his legacy because he’s unvaccinated.

“I would have had the vaccine and gone and played, but he’s got very strong beliefs, and you have to respect that,” said McEnroe. “At this point, in the pandemic, we’re two-and-a-half years in, I think people in all parts of the world know more about it, and the idea that he can’t travel here to play, to me, is a joke.”

Medvedev’s Tough Draw

With Djokovic out, the defending champion Daniil Medvedev should have a clear path to defending his title – at least in theory. Yet, the Russian has a tough draw that could see him play Nick Kyrgios, who has the fourth-shortest odds to win and previously defeated him in the Canadian Open, as early as the fourth round.

Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are on the other side of the bracket and could meet in an interesting semifinal that would represent past vs. future – Alcaraz, 19, has often been compared to Nadal.

Women’s Outright Odds

  • Iga Swiatek +300
  • Simona Halep +700
  • Elena Rybakina +1100
  • Naomi Osaka +1200
  • Aryna Sabalenka +1400
  • Cori Gauff +1600
  • Emma Raducanu +1600
  • Carolina Garcia +1600
  • Bianca Andreescu +2000
  • Ons Jabeur +2000
  • Karolina Pliskova +2000
  • Jessica Pegula +2000
  • Maria Sakkari +2200
  • Paula Badosa +2500
  • Belinda Bencic +2500

Serena’s Last Match

Nobody expects Serena Williams to win the US Open this year, but it’d sure be something if the greatest woman to ever play the game won at least one match in her swan song. Williams, who is retiring after the tournament, is set to play world No. 80 Danka Kovinic.

Wide Open Field

The women’s draw is even more wide open than the men’s, with no real favorite. Iga Swiatek was the hottest player in all of tennis just two months ago but has stumbled since her shocking third-round defeat at Wimbledon. Before that, Swiatek had won more than 30 matches in a row.

If we’re looking at smart bets for the women’s draw, it’s hard to ignore Jessica Pegula, who offers good betting value at +2000. The American will be playing in her home state and has played some of the best tennis in her career this season. She reached the quarter-final and semifinal at her last two tournaments and was a quarter-finalist in both the French and Australian Opens.
