Emma Raducanu Eyeing Her First Grand Slam Title
Reaching the grand finals of a Grand Slam tennis tournament is never easy. However, you wouldn’t be able to see that if you took a look at the road, Emma Raducanu took en route to her career-first Grand Slam finals.
The 18-year-old British tennis star has been simply phenomenal in her debut appearance at the U.S. Open and has cruised past some of the best tennis players in the world to book a ticket for the finals. And while you can be impressed with any tennis player who reaches the final stage of a Grand Slam tournament, it’s even more impressive if they manage to do it starting from the qualifiers.
As world no.150, Raducanu had to start her journey to the big stage in the 2021 U.S. Open qualifiers, where she breezed past her competition with ease. The 18-year-old first won against Bibiane Schoofs (6-1, 6-2), to which he added two more straight-set wins against Mariam Bolkvadze (6-3, 7-5) and Mayar Sherif (6-1, 6-4).
After making it through the qualifiers with flying colors, the 18-year-old tennis prodigy eased past her U.S. Open opponents. She secured six straight-set wins against the likes of Stefanie Voegele (6-2, 6-3), Zhang Shuai (6-2, 6-4), Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-0, 6-1), Shelby Rogers (6-2, 6-1), Belinda Bencic (6-3, 6-4), and Maria Sakkari (6-1, 6-4), who she eliminated from the semi-finals on Friday.
Raducanu has made history by becoming the youngest British tennis player to reach the U.S Open finals in the Open era. She is now only one step away from winning her first Grand Slam Trophy.
The Unstoppable Teen Sensation Leylah Fernandez
While Raducanu’s road to the 2021 U.S. Open finals is impressive, it’s Leylah Fernandez, whose path to her career-first Grand Slam finals took the world by storm. The 19-year-old Canadian tennis star’s run might not have been as perfect as of Raducanu, who won all of her matches in straight sets; however, Fernandez more than made up for that by eliminating some of the biggest tennis stars.
Sher started her road to glory with a 2-0 sweep of Ana Konjuh (7-6, 6-2), to which he added another sweep of Kaia Kanepi (7-5, 7-5) in round two. In round three, Fernandez eliminated the current world no.3, Naomi Osaka, in a three-set thriller (5-7, 7-6, 6-4); however, she didn’t stop there.
In round three, Fernandez edged past Angelique Kerber (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) and then went on to defeat two of the biggest favorites to win the whole thing – Elina Svitolina (6-3, 3-6, 7-6), and Aryna Sabalenka (7-6, 4-6, 6-4), who she eliminated from the 2021 U.S. Open in the semi-finals.
On her road to the finals, Fernandez has effectively eliminated three of the top-five tennis players on the WTA Rankings. The only exceptions are Ashleigh Barty, who got stopped by Rogers in R3, and Karolina Pliskova, who crashed out of the quarter-finals against Sakkari.
Fernandez wrote history and became the first tennis player since Williams in 2012 at Wimbledon to eliminate three rivals, ranked top five at a Grand Slam.
Fernandez’s next and final opponent of the 2021 U.S. Open is Raducanu, who she will meet with on Saturday, September 11. It will mark the first time in more than two decades that the U.S. Open finals will be contested between two teenagers.
The last time that happened was in 1999 when 17-year-old Serena Williams took on an 18-year-old Martina Higgins and won with 6-3, 7-6.
