Like in most years, the Breeders’ Cup Mile will be the toughest to handicap

They love it because, more often than not, if thoroughbred handicappers find the BC Mile winner, they get to cash for big profits. Such is the modern day horseplayer’s dilemma. 

This year’s Breeders’ Cup is no different than past year’s. Although Palace Pier is the +225 chalk, nobody believes those are fair odds.

The 2020 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner finished second in her last couple. The Irish Champions Stakes and the Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe. The 5-year-old mare routinely beats up on her male counterparts. 

Not only that, but the American contingent is sad and without Mishriff, the Europeans look a cut below. Right now, Tarnawa might be more of a lock than Letruska in the Distaff.   

Based on future odds, Jackie’s Warrior is a lock to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint

Why? Top contenders like Gamine and Life Is Good figure to run in different races. Todd Pletcher is pointing Life Is Good to the BC Dirt Mile. 

Gamine could pick up a nice paycheck in what could end up a glorified workout in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, a race she won by 6 ¼ lengths last year. 

If Gamine and Life Is Good don’t enter for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, consider Jackie’s Warrior a possible key horse in your horizontal plays. 

Letruska an even money chalk to win the Distaff

If you key Jackie’s Warrior in the Sprint and Tarnawa in the Turf, you must make a decision regarding Letruska.

The favorite to win the Distaff could have everything her way up front if Gamine doesn’t enter. But Royal Flag, who finished second by a half a length to Letruska in the Personal Ensign, might be the upset play of the day.

Royal Flag should get the right pace setup if Horologist and Shedaresthedevil run in this. Give Royal a big shot to upset one of the biggest chalks during the 2-day festival. 

Knicks Go and Essential Quality maintain favoritism to win the Classic

Knicks Go and Essential Quality are the two favorites to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic. On paper, it looks impossible to beat the Brad Cox trained Knicks Go.

But the Paynter sired runner may not want any part of 1 ¼ miles. Essential Quality has improved enough to get it done. So has second-place Belmont winner Hot Rod Charlie. 

Other contenders include Art Collector and Max Player, which means right now, with less than two weeks until the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, the Classic favorite is an underlay.
