The Preliminary Round, otherwise known as the group stage, in the Olympic soccer tournament is over, and we are now heading into the knockout phase.
The 8 remaining nations on the men’s side of things will play on Friday, while the women, who we are going to focus on here, will get into the quarterfinals on Saturday.
My Analysis
We have seen enough of each of the remaining teams to have a pretty solid idea of how they will play moving forward, but they will all know that we are at the stage where one-off game means that the hunt for a gold medal is over.
Let’s take a look at the 4 upcoming games as we try to pick some winners.
^United States -147 vs Japan +370
Saturday, 9 AM EST | You really can’t do any better than what the US women did in the group stage, winning all 3 games to advance as the group winners.
They outscored the opposition 9-2 and have what looks to be a manageable game against Japan.

Spain -330 vs Colombia +800
Saturday, 11 AM EST | Spain came into this tournament as one of the favorites to win the gold medal, and the world champions have looked good to this point.
They won all 3 of their group stage games, scoring 5 and surrendering just 1.
Colombia managed a 1 win in the group stage and had a chance to win the group, but they lost 1-0 in their final game and had to settle for one of the best 3rd place finisher spots. I think they are in trouble here.

Olympic Soccer Pick: Spain 2-0 Colombia Draw: +440 |
Canada +212 vs Germany +118
Saturday, 1 PM EST | It has been a tough road to this point for Canada, despite winning all 3 of their group games.
They were dinged 6 points after being found using drones to spy on their opposition. Still, they found a way through and now have a tough matchup against Germany.
The Germans had a pair of comfortable wins in the group stage, but they also suffered a 4-1 hammering at the hands of the United States.
This might well be the best matchup of the quarterfinals and it should be a close one.

Olympic Soccer Pick: Canada 2-1 Germany Draw: +440 |
France -139 vs Brazil +350
Saturday, 3 PM EST | Much of the pressure is squarely on the shoulders of the host nation, France, and some cracks certainly showed in the group stage.
They won 2 and lost 1, winning the group, but they would have had to settle for 2nd if not for Canada being docked points.
Brazil opened with a win before losing back-to-back games, needing to settle for one of the 3rd place spots in the knockout stage.
I think they are going to have a hard time pulling out of this mini slump.

Olympic Soccer Pick: France 3-1 Brazil Draw: +290 |
