As we head into a new week of football action, we are one step closer to the end of many domestic leagues and major tournaments. In the latter category, we have the CONCACAF Champions Cup Semifinal odds coming our way this week.

In terms of wagering, the matchups are perhaps a little advantageous for bettors. This is because we have an all-MLS matchup in one game, while a pair of Liga MX teams are going head-to-head in the other semi.

We are going to do a deep dive into both games to see if we can come up with some winning wagers.

Coming into this tournament, we had a few teams getting a first-round bye, but both of these teams had to take the long road. Tigres opened on the road against Real Esteril, losing 1-0 before heading home for the second leg, where they cruised to a 3-0 in. It was a similar story in Round 2, with Tigres drawing 1-1 on the road to FC Cincinnati before once again using home field advantage to win 3-1 and move on.

It was a much easier time for Cruz Azul in the opening round of the Champions Cup, beating Real Hope 5-0 over the 2 legs. The second-round matchup looked to be a whole lot tougher for the Liga MX side, but they cruised to a 4-1 at home while drawing 0-0 in Seattle.

It was a tight affair, as expected, in the quarterfinal against Cub America, who are the 3-time reigning champions of Liga MX, as well as the most successful team in this competition. After a 0-0 draw in Leg 1, Cruz Azul went home and picked up a 2-1 as a slight underdog to get to this point.

They have the same record as Tigress over the last 5 games, scoring 9 and giving up 6 goals during that run.

The last 10 meetings between these two teams have either ended in a draw or been decided by a single goal, so I think we can expect a tight one. I like Leg 1 to end in a draw.

What is perhaps a little surprising at this stage of things is that none of the teams who received an opening round bye are still alive.

Given that Vancouver has had some injuries to deal with this season, it is something of a surprise that they are still in it. They opened things up with a win over Deportivo Saprissa, coming from 2-1 down on the road to win 2-0 and close things out. Round 2 was incredibly entertaining, with the Whitecaps and Monterrey tied 3-3 after 2 games.

This led to Vancouver moving on via the away goals rule, courtesy of their 2 goals away from home. It was the same story against Pumas in the last round, with Vancouver once again surviving after a 4-4 draw over the 2 games. The Whitecaps scored 3 times on the road to move on via away goals. Vancouver is unbeaten in their last 3, although there have been 3 draws in there. They scored 10 and surrendered 4 in that stretch.

It is not a surprise to see Inter Miami in the final 4 given that they have the best player in the world on their side. The feeling was that Messi and company were on a collision course with America in the final, but that is now over given that the Mexican champions are out. Miami made short work of Sporting KC in Round 1, winning 4-1 over the 2 games.

The next round saw Cavalier as the opposition, which proved to be as straightforward as we all thought it would be, with Miami winning 4-0 over the 2 legs. They had a bigger challenge in the quarterfinal, going down 1-0 in Leg 1 before storming back to win 3-2 in the second leg. With that win, Miami is now unbeaten in their last 4 games, scoring 5 and giving up 2 in that stretch.

These teams have only ever met once, and it was Miami winning that one 2-1 in Vancouver. They would take a similar result here, and I think they might just get it.

Which of the Final Four Teams Will Win the CONCACAF Champions Cup

Throughout this tournament, I have been talking about Club America as being the potential champions, but with them now gone, I need to pick another winner. There are certainly plenty of football fans and pundits who believe that Lionel Messi might well be the trump card and the one to lead Inter Miami to glory, but I am not so sure that will be the case.

This is a tournament that has been dominated by Mexican teams overs the years, which is why I think that Cruz Azul might well be the team to beat. It will be interesting to watch Leg 1 this week to see if our opinion changes after both games.

At the start of the CONCACAF Semifinals, Monterrey was the second choice to win the title after America. The thinking was that Monterrey would beat a floundering Columbus side.

The Crew improved significantly. Monterrey needs to intensify efforts, having managed only 10 total shots and 6 on goal in the first leg of the match.

Monterrey also controlled possession 45.9% of the time. At home on their pitch, Monterrey must outshoot Columbus and control possession. Doing so will put the pressure on the Crew.

Columbus played one of their best matches of the season in the first leg. Not only did the Crew outshoot Monterrey 12 to 10, but 8 of Columbus’s shots, compared to Monterrey’s 6, were on target.

Columbus will be perfectly happy putting the game in the hands of goalie Patrick Schulte in a penalty shootout round. Give Monterrey the win, but the aggregate will remain up in the air until the penalties happen.

America is playing great soccer. One of the favorites to win it all has won the last 4 matches heading into this massive throw down against rival Pachuca.

Monterrey, as the road team, will aggressively attack for a likely 1-goal victory over Columbus. If the Crew win, the semifinals shift to Monterrey’s home pitch for the second leg.

Winner: Club America +175

Beating Pachuca won’t be easy, but Club America is in excellent form. The favorite to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup outscored New England and Toluca by a combined 10 goals to 3.

America won 4-0 against Pachuca at home, giving them a significant edge to defeat Monterrey in the final.

Second: Monterrey +175

This pick favors Columbus over Monterrey, not due to belief in Monterrey’s superiority, but rather luck in facing a less competitive opponent in the Champions Cup.

Monterrey is a quality club. But after dispatching of Columbus, the +175 co-favorite will fall to America.

Third: Pachuca +350

Pachuca deserves to be in the final. But, unfortunately for them, they face Club America. If there is a team in the final four that can beat Club America, it’s Pachuca.

So if you believe, go for it because the +350 the odds definitely make Pachuca playable.

Fourth: Columbus Crew +500

Columbus should have lost to Tigres UANL. The Crew is a co-second on the MLS Standings. But facing MLS teams is different than throwing down against a top Liga MX squad like Monterrey.

Columbus is unlikely to defeat Monterrey; if they surprise and eliminate them, they’ll face either Pachuca or Club America, both favored to beat the MLS team.
