Jannik Sinner is the defending champion in Montpellier, but is obviously not in this year’s draw as he just won his first grand slam at the 2024 Australian Open. Sinner beat American Maxime Cressy in straight sets in last year’s final. Alexander Bublik, who has the third-shortest odds to win this year’s tournament, beat Alexander Zverev in the 2022 final. Other past winners include three-time winner Gael Monfils and four-time winner Richard Gasquet. A French player won the tournament in eight of 10 years from 2010 to 2020 – it wasn’t held in 2011.

Gaston has the benefit of the home crowd on his side, while Shapovalov is a player with shattered confidence. He lost both of his matches this year in straight sets and is still apparently dealing with the lingering effects of a knee injury. Gaston to win at plus money is great value.

Flavio Cobolli vs. Gael Monfils

ATP Odds: Flavio Cobolli +19; Gael Monfils -300

While there’s a lot to like about the underdog in the aforementioned match, it’s probably best to play it safe with Monfils in this match. He has never played the 21-year-old Flavio Cobolli in his career, but is a three-time winner in Montpellier and a favorite in France. Cobolli reached the third round at the Australian Open, but is a poor indoor hard court player with a career record of 10-12, whereas Monfils is 153-67 in his career on the surface, including 22-8 over the last four seasons.

As the top seed, the draw isn’t necessarily easy for Rune as he could run into four-time champion Gasquet in the second round. Auger-Aliassime, the third seed, has a decent path to winning his half of the draw and is coming off of a third-round exit in Australia, where he looked to be returning to his 2022 form before losing to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.
