The college football season is almost upon us, and we all have ideas as to who we think will win the National Championship this season.
In terms of the playoffs, things may become a little more forgiving this season now that we have 12 teams instead of 4 making it into the postseason.
My Analysis
While one loss will not immediately eliminate teams the way it did in the past, you have to think that teams are still going to need to get into double-digit win territory to be considered by the Playoff Committee.
There are many teams that could potentially hit that mark, so let’s take a look at the 4 major conferences to figure out who these teams might be.
^ACC
There are 3 teams who I think have a shot at getting to 10 wins in the ACC this season. I think we have to start out with the Florida State Seminoles, who won all 12 games last season.
They still missed out on the playoffs even with that unbeaten run, so look for them to change that this season.
This could well prove to be something of a bounce back season for the Clemson Tigers, who have been on a downturn over the past few seasons.
Their schedule suggests that 10 wins is indeed a possibility.
Finally, I think we also have to look at the Miami Hurricanes, and while I am not totally sold on them, they still deserve to be in this conversation.
Top 5 to Win
- Florida State Seminoles +290
- Clemson Tigers +350
- Miami Hurricanes +400
- Louisville Cardinals +650
- NC State Wolfpack +650
Big Ten
There is going to be a new team in the conference this season, with the Oregon Ducks looking to get off to a big start. They look like a pretty complete team and are a good bet to hit double-digit wins.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are looking to get back to the postseason after missing out the last few seasons, and it looks to me as though they have the squad to do it. I think they are a pretty safe bet to get to 10 wins.
I think we are looking at 3 teams potentially getting to 10 wins in the Big Ten, and if the first 2 teams we spoke about do it, then that means that either the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Michigan Wolverines might be duking it out for the other spot.
Top 5 to Win
- Ohio State Buckeyes +150
- Oregon Ducks +216/li>
- Penn State Nittany Lions +480
- Michigan Wolverines +680
- USC Trojans +2200
Big 12
With Texas and Oklahoma now over in the SEC, the door is open for some other teams to dominate.
This conference looks to me to have the potential to be rather cutthroat, to the point where I only really feel comfortable talking about 2 teams potentially getting to 10 wins.
I think the Utah Utes are the best bet to get to that magic number, as I think they have what it takes to win the conference. I would also suggest that the Kansas State Wildcats need to be in the conversation.
Top 5 to Win
- Utah Utes +320
- Kansas State Wildcats +370/li>
- Oklahoma State Cowboys +750
- UCF Knights +860
- Kansas Jayhawks +960
SEC
This is where things get really interesting, as there are several teams that could make it to 10 wins. The most obvious, of course, is the Georgia Bulldogs, who have made a habit of routinely hitting that mark.
It is going to be interesting to see how the Texas Longhorns adapt to life in the SEC, but I think they have the ability to perform well and hit 10 wins.
Ole Miss has the potential to be a dark horse team this season, with the playoffs very much in their sights.
That said, you could also make a case for Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee getting to 10 wins. This conference is going to be as fun as always.
Top 5 to Win
- Georgia Bulldogs +180
- Texas Longhorns +330/li>
- Ole Miss Rebels +710
- Alabama Crimson Tide +740
- LSU Tigers +970
