Writer’s Top Races Picks Happening this Weekend

Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes

6 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds and up

Nakatomi, third in the Dubai Golden Shaheen in the last, will break from the gate from the favorite.

Subrogate, an Arrogate sired runner, and Baby Yoda will also attract money.

Pay attention to My Buddy B and Skelly.

If either garners action, it will be a sign that both can get it done in what will be a short field.

Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes

1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year olds

The annual prep for the Grade 1 Traves Stakes should be a fantastic race.

Preakness winner Seize the Gold, and Kentucky Derby second place finisher Sierra Leone headline the field.

Batten Down, the Grade 3 Ohio Derby winner will be the most regally bred colt in the race.

Tapit sired the Bill Mott trained runner while Closed Hatches, Batten Down’s broodmare, is one of the top mares to run in the past decade.

Todd Pletcher trained Fierceness, Gould’s Gold, and Pony Express should also break from the gate.

Fierceness and Seize the Grey could compromise each other’s chances if the pair get into a speed duel.

Grade 2 San Diego Handicap

1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds and up

Three runners project to demand the most action.

John Shirreff’s trained Express Train is a quality animal and love Del Mar.

Arabian Knight, trained by Bob Baffert, finished fourth in the Breeders Cup Classic last November.

Newgrange has enough talent to beat Express Train and Arabian Knight but didn’t show it in the Santa Anita Handicap.

No doubt, Newgrange will offer overly odds and is a must consider if the colt steps onto Del Mar’s dirt with a lot of energy.

Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes

6 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds and up

Top west coast sprinters will break from the gate in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby on Saturday.

Doug O’Neill trained Happy Jack projects as the favorite. Bob Baffert’s Jackstown will have his fans.

But the last out allowance winner must prove he can step up in class and win.

Baffert is flying high after Churchill Downs lifted his ban. So make sure to give Jackstown a big shot to win.

Anarchist, See Through It, Straight No Chaser, and Roll On Big Joe all have a shot to pull off the upset.

Handicap fully and consider all angles before making your win bet.

Grade 2 Bowling Green

1/38 miles turf – 4 year olds and up
Sunday, July 28th, 2025

Grade 2 Man O’War stakes winner and Charles Appleby trained Silver Knott is going to go off close to even money.

The Godolphin bred runner should outclass the expected field.

Ohana Honor, trained by Shug McGaughey, will break from the gate the second choice.

Ohana is going to have to pick up his game if he hopes to upset Silve Knott.

Sugoi, English Conqueror, and Soldier Rising should also run.
