We are about 30 games into the MLB season, and while that may seem like a lot, the harsh reality is that it is merely a small fraction of the entire season. Some will suggest that 30 games are more than enough to get an idea of what a team is all about, but as we have seen in the past, teams that get out of the gate quickly often find it tough to maintain that pace. Similarly, we often see teams get out to a slow start only to slip into a higher gear to make a run to the postseason. The question we have here is whether now is the time to wager on teams to make the playoffs. Let’s look at the pros and cons so you can start planning your bets against the MLB Playoffs Odds.
Is it Too Early to Bet On Which Team Will Make the Playoffs? | MLB Betting
The first thing to consider is the odds that are currently on the board for each team to make it to the playoffs this season. Those odds are going to change as the season progresses, and they may well not change in your favor. For a team like the LA Dodgers, who have been a playoff regular for years, now might well be the time to get your bet on, as their odds are likely to get worse as they continue to rack up wins. In terms of the odds, I might well be looking at a couple of teams who are of the dark horse variety, as that is where you might find value.
Another thing to look at before wagering is the state of each division. Is there one team that looks to be a cut above the rest and therefore basically a lock to make it in? Right now, you would have to look at the New York Mets in the NL East. They already have a 7-game lead, which is a lot in the early going, and are in fact the only team in that division with a winning record. We might yet see the Atlanta Braves improve, but the rest of the teams seem a little iffy. Again, the current odds for the Mets making the playoffs might be about as good as it is going to get.
We mentioned earlier in this piece the possibility that some teams might take a minute to get rolling. A good example of that is the Houston Astros, a team many considered to be a playoff lock. They have been a little up and down to start the season, but they appear to be putting it together right now, as they come into this week on an impressive 8-game win streak. That still has them in 2nd in the division, but they are showing signs of being the team that we expected them to be before the season began.
When it comes to wagering on which MLB teams will make the playoffs, it really is up to you when you want to make those wagers. Some bettors have their predictions for the season already done and will want to make their bets now. Others will adopt a wait and see approach, with some even waiting until the second half of the season starts before committing fully to any team. There is no right or wrong way to wager, as you need to stick with what works best for you.
