Who Saw This Coming? Biggest Surprises So Far and How They’re Affecting the MLB Odds

MLB Teams That Have Surprised and Are Shifting the Odds: It seems every year in MLB that there are a few teams that hugely surpass expectations and a few that massively underachieve.

Here are 4 teams and their current MLB futures odds to win the 2024 World Series that you can find every day in MyBookie Sportsbook. I believe each does have a shot.

Cleveland Guardians World Series Pick +1100

Cleveland was supposed to take a step back from last season’s 76-86 team as potential Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona retired and then very early in this season, ace Shane Bieber, the former AL Cy Young winner, was lost to a season-ending injury.

Yet the Guardians have the best record in the American League and are running away with the Central Division. Outfielder and leadoff hitter Steven Kwan has been remarkable.

Milwaukee Brewers World Series Pick +2000

The Brewers are very much in the same boat as the Guardians.

Milwaukee was supposed to take a major step back this year because stellar manager Craig Counsell left for the rival Cubs, ace and former NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes was traded to Baltimore and arguably the team’s second-best pitcher, Brandon Woodruff, will miss the entire 2024 season.

All-Star closer Devin Williams is yet to debut off a back injury. Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Williams could return from the 60-day injured list sooner than his initial mid-to-late-July recovery timeline.

Yet here the Brew Crew are running away with the NL Central despite having started 14 different pitchers, most in the majors. Journeyman Dallas Keuchel was the 14th on Wednesday. Willy Adames has started all 81 games this season, all at shortstop.

Texas Rangers World Series Pick +7500

The Rangers won their first-ever World Series last season but are not close to even an AL wild-card spot currently at 37-43 and six games out of the final WC spot. To be fair, Texas has not had two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom yet this season and won’t until after the All-Star break.

Three-time winner Max Scherzer only made his debut off injury last Sunday. He threw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and walking none. Scherzer also induced seven whiffs on 31 swings for a 23 percent whiff rate and 26 percent CSW.

His four-seam fastball velocity was 92.9 mph, which is down from last year’s 93.7 mph, and he also allowed 92 percent zone contact, so he was really only missing bats when he got chases out of the zone. Scherzer tied Greg Maddux for the 11th most strikeouts in Major League Baseball history at 3,371.

We still think the Rangers make some noise when deGrom and injured rookies Evan Carter and Josh Jung are back from the injured list.

Texas is 11-14-1 in series play this season, including just 4-10-0 in the last 10. Texas is 8-1-1 in series this season when winning the opener, compared to 3-13-0 when losing it. The Rangers have now been swept four times.

Arizona Diamondbacks World Series Pick +6000

Arizona lost to Texas in the 2024 World Series and appeared to get much better this offseason in adding starting pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Eduardo Rodriguez as well as trading for third baseman Eugenio Suarez but the Snakes are 39-41 and already double-digits behind the Dodgers in the NL West.

Rodriguez has yet to make his season debut off a terrific 2023 season with Detroit. Ace Zac Gallen also is on the IL but could return by Saturday. Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll was an MVP candidate last year.

Carroll opened the 2024 season with his batting average hovering just below or just above the .200 mark over April and May. He was batting as low as eighth in the order in May and as recently as June 8, his average was stuck at .199.

He’s hitting better this month and Arizona has been one of the majors’ best teams in June.
