Heading into the 2024 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament on Saturday there are two underdogs and two massive favorites. Alabama is a +1600 dog to beat NC State, Purdue, and UConn. The other dog is North Carolina State, which is a +1800 dog to upset Purdue and then upset Connecticut or Bama in the National Championship game on April 8.

Alabama and NC State Final Four and National Championship to Win Analysis

We must give Alabama mad props for coming back down 8 against the North Carolina Tar Heels at halftime to upset UNC 87-86. Four of Alabama’s starting five scored in double figures.

But the real reason to love Bama’s win is that the Crimson Tide tightened up the defense, holding Amando Bacot, R.J. Davis, and the rest of the Tar Heels to 33 second half points. However, although Bama looked great in the comeback win, we must question the odds on Alabama to upset UConn in the Final Four Semifinals and then beat Purdue or North Carolina State on Monday.

Bama expended a ton of energy. Not only that, but on Saturday, the Crimson Tide faces the best team in college basketball, one that has yet to yield more than 58 points to a single NCAA Tournament opponent. Bama won’t get by Connecticut. Therefore, they aren’t a great underdog play to win the title.

Worth betting on Alabama to win the title: No

NC State Wolfpack +1800

Purdue has been the best basketball team from beginning to end this season. Later in the season, UConn overtook Purdue as the best squad, but early in the season, Purdue was beating up on teams like Arizona and Marquette, a couple of 2 seeds.

With that being written, NC State matches up with Purdue. DJ Burns Jr. is one of the few bigs in college hoops who can play Zach Edey man-to-man. For sure, Burns Jr. gives up a tower of height. But the NC State forward’s body type will allow him to muscle Edey on the blocks.

When it comes to the guards, DJ Horne is one of the best in the nation. Braden Smith is good, but Horne should win the matchup. So if NC State beats Purdue, what are their chances of upsetting UConn?

The chances aren’t great because the Huskies might be best college basketball team we’ve seen in at least a decade. Still, if NC State continues the miracle run, whose to say they don’t come up with the perfect game against the much better opponent, ala Nick Valvano’s 1983 NC State Wolfpack victory over the Houston Cougars and Phi Slamma Jama? The odds make NC State the underdog to back.
