Why Bet on Duke?

Duke (17-3) comes off a 74-65 win at Louisville on Saturday and probably will move up a spot or two in the new AP Top 25 on Monday. The Blue Devils went on a 12-0 run late in the second half, highlighted by consecutive three-pointers from freshman AJ Griffin. He finished 5-of-5 from behind the arc for a game-high 22 points. Griffin becomes the first Duke freshman in history to shoot 100% from three-point range on a minimum of five attempts.

Griffin is one of only 13 players nationally averaging .500 or better from three-point range with a minimum of 50 attempts. He is one two major conference players, the only major conference freshman and one of four freshmen nationally doing so.

Mark Williams (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Paolo Banchero (11 points, 15 rebounds) each notched a double-double and were able to establish their presence on the interior, as Duke finished with 42 points in the paint. It was Williams’ second straight double-double and third over the last five games. Over Duke’s last five games, Williams is 31-of-41 (.756) from the field and averaging 14.6 points and 9.2 rebounds.

Five-time ACC Freshman of the Week Banchero is averaging a double-double over Duke’s last five games with 17.2 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and a .524 field goal percentage in that span.  Banchero is sixth in the ACC in scoring (17.6), fifth in rebounding (8.3), ninth in field goal pct. (.500) and leads all power conference true freshmen nationally in scoring. In ACC play, his 18.9 points lead the conference, while his 9.4 rebounds are second.

Duke finished with a season-high 20 offensive rebounds. Its Duke’s 47 total rebounds were three shy of the team’s season high (50 vs. Lafayette) and one shy of the team’s ACC season high (48 vs. Georgia Tech). Duke’s 22 second-chance points were its ACC season high. Duke finished with 15 assists on 30 field goals, the 16th time in 20 games the team has assisted on at least half of its field goals. It has happened in each of the last five games. Duke has held 13 of its 20 opponent this season to 70 points or less.

Duke enters Monday with the nation’s third best assist/turnover ratio of 1.72 and the team has assisted on 70 percent of its field goals over the last five games; 60 percent for the season.

Why Bet on Notre Dame?

The Irish (14-6) won their ninth consecutive home game Saturday, 69-65 over Virginia to stay perfect at Purcell Pavilion in 2021-22. Prentiss Hubb sank two free throws with 4 seconds left to clinch it.

Notre Dame was led by 16 points each from Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin, while Paul Atkinson Jr. and Blake Wesley each scored 14.  Wesley (17) and Goodwin (20) both extended their double-digit game scoring streaks, Wesley’s continue to add to his Notre Dame true freshman record.

After surrendering nine offensive rebounds in the first half, Notre Dame held Virginia to just two in the second 20 minutes. Notre Dame improved to 10-0 this season when connecting on 10-or-more three-point field goals.

Goodwin has established himself as one of the most efficient and skilled scorers in the country – and is the only player in the country shooting .500 from FG, .500 from 3FG (min. 1.5 3FGM/G) and averaging over 15 ppg.  Hubb leads all ACC players in assist/turnover ratio (6.2), has back-to-back turnover free games and only one turnover committed in last five ACC games.

Notre Dame is the only major conference team with two shooters in the nation’s top five in three-point field goal percentage:  Goodwin (2nd, .500) and senior Nate Laszewski (5th, .474). Laszewski had 997 career points and when he reaches 1,000 most likely Monday, Notre Dame will become the first team in the nation this season to have five 1,000 career point scorers on its roster – Paul Atkinson Jr., Goodwin, Hubb, Trey Wertz and Laszewski.

Notre Dame has started the 2021-22 Atlantic Coast Conference with a 7-2 record, which is tied with three other seasons for the program’s best start in conference play.
