USF vs #19 Gonzaga Series History

Gonzaga won both regular season meetings. The teams played most recently on Feb. 29 in San Francisco and the Zags won 86-68 – Gonzaga’s 29th straight win in the series. Graham Ike led the way with 26 points. Gonzaga pulled away early in the second half, scoring the first 13 points to build a 14-point lead. Ike capped the run with back-to-back baskets from in close to make it 48-34 and the Bulldogs were never threatened the rest of the way. Nolan Hickman added 22 points. Malik Thomas scored 23 points and Jonathan Mogbo added 14 for San Francisco.

The WCC third-seeded Dons (23-9) advanced to the semifinal with a 72-51 win over Portland on Sunday. The Pilots played on back-to-back days with a limited rotation of seven players and could not keep up with the depth of the Dons. San Francisco shot 53 percent overall and made 11-of-24 three-pointers, while the Pilots were held to just 33 percent overall. The Dons started out on fire by making their first five field goal attempts and racing out to a 14-2 lead. The margin grew to 42-19 heading into halftime as the Pilots struggled to get anything going on offense. The game was already over. It was the fewest points allowed by USF in any half this season.

In a balanced effort, four of the Dons starters scored in double figures, marking the 20th time this season that four San Francisco players have scored 10 or more points in a game (17-3 record).

Individually, Marcus Williams led the way with 16 points, on 6-of-8 shooting and four made threes, along with a team-high +27 plus/minus. Rounding out the backcourt, Mike Sharavjamts and Malik Thomas scored 10 and 12 points, respectively, each shooting 4-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-4 from deep. Ndewedo Newbury totaled 13 points and six rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting and three makes from distance, as he earned Player of the Game honors for his efforts.

Coming close to yet another double-double, Jonathan Mogbo put up nine points and eight rebounds in a team-high 28 minutes of action. USF is in the WCC Tournament semifinals for a third straight year but it hasn’t won the event in decades.

Five Dons earned All-WCC honors, highlighted by two All-WCC First Team selections in Mogbo, who also won WCC Newcomer of the Year, and Williams. Additionally, Ryan Beasley was tabbed WCC Freshman of the Year and made the WCC All-Freshman Team while both Thomas and Newbury were named Honorable Mentions.

At the conclusion of regular season play, the Dons finished first in the WCC in conference play in free throw percentage (76.2), turnovers forced per game (12.9), and steals per game (7.88) while also ranking second in the league in points per game (79.0). Mogbo was the only player in the league to average a double-double, tallying 15.6 points per contest (sixth in WCC) on 62.3 percent shooting (third in WCC) and a conference-high 10.4 rebounds per game.

Thomas finished with the second-highest free throw percentage in WCC games, shooting 86.0 percent from the stripe. Defensively, Newbury owns the third-highest block average in the WCC at 1.3 blocks per game, and Ryan Beasley holds the conference’s third-highest steal average at 1.5 steals per contest.

Why Bet on Gonzaga Bulldogs?

WCC No. 2 seed Gonzaga (24-6) got a bye all the way to the semifinals along with No. 1 Saint Mary’s. We last saw the Zags win at SMC to close the regular season, 70-57. After Gonzaga drained the first bucket of the second half, the Gaels went on 10-0 run, sparked by Aidan Mahaney, to cut the deficit to 8, but that would be as close as they would get to the Zags for the remainder of the contest.

The defense for the Gaels certainly shored up in half number two, limiting the Zags to just 26 second half points, the second fewest points the Zags have scored in a single half this season (25 in the 2nd Half vs Washington). After surrendering 44 points in the first half to the Zags, and allowing them to shoot 64% from the field in the first frame, the Gaels were able to make the adjustments needed to stay competitive with Gonzaga in the second half.

The Gaels outscored the Zags 29-26 in the second half, limiting Gonzaga to 40% shooting from the field, holding them to their second lowest scoring half of the season. The Gaels also shot better from beyond the arc in half number two, but it was not enough to overcome the 16 point deficit that they took into the halftime break. Despite the loss, the Gaels continued to dominate on the glass, outrebounding the Zags 38-27, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Saint Mary’s had won 16 games in a row and been the only team in the country without a league loss. The Bulldogs have won eight straight games since losing at home to the Gaels on Feb. 3, with three of them being Quad 1 wins. Graham Ike led the way vs. SMC with 24 points and is the first Gonzaga player to score at least 20 points in seven consecutive games since Adam Morrison in 2005-06. Ike had plenty of help against Saint Mary’s: Ryan Nembhard added 20 points and 10 assists, while Ben Gregg scored 12.

Ike, Nembhard, and Anton Watson were named First Team All-West Coast Conference. Nolan Hickman earned second team honors and Braden Huff was tabbed All-Freshman. Ike led the West Coast Conference in scoring during league play at 18.4 points per game at a WCC-best 64 percent shooting from the field. He scored 20 or more in 11 of the 16 WCC games, including the last seven contests. The redshirt junior is second in the conference averaging 16.9 points per games overall at 62 percent from the field. Ike is fourth in the league pulling down 7.3 rebounds per game.

Nembhard tops the West Coast Conference in assists per game at 6.4, including 6.8 in league games, and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9, 4.0 in WCC play). The Canadian is 14th in the conference averaging 12.8 points per outing, and 13.8 in WCC action. He is sixth in the conference averaging 1.4 steals per league game. Nembhard has 24 games of five or more assists this season.

Watson led the West Coast Conference in steals per league game at 1.7 and was second overall at 1.6. He moved to second all-time at GU this season with 211 career steals. The senior is the only player in program history to have 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, and 200 steals in a career. This season, he is ninth in the conference averaging 14.2 points per game, and seventh grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game.

Hickman paced the West Coast Conference in three-pointers made per league game at 2.9. He was also second in the WCC making 45.5 percent from behind-the-arc in conference play. Huff is averaging 9.8 points per game at 61.3 percent shooting from the field.
