We are now just a matter of days away from the Super Bowl, with the Philadelphia Eagles looking to prevent the Kansas City Chiefs from picking up an unprecedented three-peat.
At this stage of the proceedings, I think it’s fair to say that we all have an opinion on who we believe will win the big game.
I would also suggest that many of you have already placed your wagers on the outcome, but what about all the other wagers that are available on Super Bowl Sunday?
This is a sporting event like no other, as the Super Bowl very often prompts people to bet on the game, despite the fact that they don’t wager on sports on any other occasion.
Early estimates suggest that roughly $139 billion will be wagered on the Super Bowl in the United States alone, so you can understand why bookies want to have as many betting options as possible.
This is where prop bets come into play. These wagers run the gamut from odds on individual players to hit certain goals, all the way up to the length of the National Anthem.
In short, you could spend a small fortune playing prop bets, but should you invest a ton of money in these props? That is what we are going to discuss here, so let’s get to it.
^The Popular Prop Bets
This may be a little simplistic, but I believe that prop bets can be split into two distinct categories. There are skill props, such as wagering on the first player to score, or the over/under total of rushing yards for individual players, as well as a host of others. Besides those, you also have what are essentially chance bets, such as the aforementioned National anthem length or the coin flip. The latter are certainly riskier and are more for fun than anything else, but we will get into those a little later in this piece.
Props Popularity
The reason why prop bets on players and team totals are so popular is because they are somewhat more predictable than others. There is a ton of historical data to draw upon that can help you figure out what a player or team might do in any given game. While the Duper Bowl is the biggest game of the season, it is, at its core, still a game of football between two teams, just with higher stakes.
Passing Yards
Betting on the total passing yards by either QB or rushing yards by the running backs tend to be at the top of the list of the popular bets, as does wagering on the Super Bowl MVP. The latter is especially popular, simply because it’s not as complicated as it may seem. Generally speaking, it is a QB or receiver that wins the MVP, but this year, you might also look at the running backs, especially if the Philadelphia Eagles win it all. If they do, there is a good chance that Saquon Barkley is going to have a lot to do with that win, so he might be worth a look.

Team Specific Props
While we all tend to focus on individual performances in any given game, the harsh reality is that it takes a team effort to win a Championship. Sure, one player is going to stand out and deliver an MVP performance, but that player will need help from everyone on the team to excel and take that award.
If you are interested in wagering on team performances as opposed to individual stats, then you are in luck, as there are plenty of team specific props that you can wager on in the Super Bowl.
Rushing Yards
Again, there are a couple of different ways you can go when playing team specific props. You can focus on one team or another and wager on whether they will hit specific marks, such as team rushing yards or points scored, breaking that latter one down into specific quarters.
Alternatively, you can also do head-to-head wagers here, too, wagering on things like whether the Eagles will have more total rushing yards than the Chiefs, or vice versa. The beauty of these props is that you can cater to them specifically to how you think the game will play out.
Special Teams
While we are in this category, we also need to talk about other aspects of team play that can have an impact on the outcome of a game, as well as your prop bets. We are talking about special teams here, and while those guys do not tend to get covered in glory, they are crucial to the success or failure of their team.
With the new kick-off rules in play this season, there is now a better chance than there has been in years that someone might return a kick for a TD. You can wager on that, as well as things like the total number of field goals or TDs scored, a lot of which will be dictated by field position, which in turn is dictated by special teams play.
Props and Risks
There is plenty of value to be found in individual players and team props, and while it does take some work and research to break them all down, you still have plenty of time to do that before the Super Bowl begins.
You also have time to look at all the other prop bets that are out there, many of which are incredibly risky and potentially not even worth looking at. That said, these props can be fun if you look at them as such and make them a small part of your overall Super Bowl betting budget. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the riskier props on the bookies board for Super Bowl 59.
^Worst Super Bowl Props to Avoid
We have now broken down some of the most popular, and potentially profitable, Super Bowl prop bets, which means that it’s now time to turn our attention to those that are definitely in the riskier category. Yes, all bets are risky, but with things like individual player stats and team totals, there is a certain level of skill and research that can be done to make an informed wager. The bets we are going to talk about here require little more than chance and can quickly part you from your money if you are not careful.
National Anthem
The prop bet madness begins even before the Super Bowl starts, with a pair of wagering options that are incredibly popular. The first of these is the National Anthem, or more specifically, how long it will take the artist performing the song to finish it. This year, it will be Jon Baptiste performing The Star-Spangled Banner, but how long will it take him to perform the song? Will he sing it in a traditional manner that will be quick and to the point, or is he going to put together runs and long notes that extend the song beyond it’s usual runtime? That is what you are going to need to guess, with the OVER/UNDER set at a specific time. The fact that the singer is unknown to many makes this one even more difficult than usual. Yes, it’s a 50/50 bet, but I really do believe there are better ways to spend your betting dollars.
Coin Toss
The same rules apply with the coin toss, with this prop asking you to pick whether the coin will land on heads or tails. Again, this is a wager of chance that requires no skill at all, and is also a 50/50 pick, but I don’t like it. I always get the feeling that losing a wager on the coin toss sets the tone for the rest of your wagers. That is, of course, not true at all, but it just feels that way to me, which is why I would rather go for the more skillful picks that you somehow feel in control of.
Taylor Swift
One thing that we can be sure of is that Taylor Swift is going to be in attendance to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play for the Chiefs. This is sure to be fun for those who love to celebrity watch, but is it something worth wagering on? Yes, you can wager how many times the camera will cut to Taylor in her private box. I love to focus on the game and what is happening on the field, so my feeling is that you get distracted by these types of props, hoping the camera switches from what is happening on the field to a shot of Taylor Swift hugging a celebrity friend. It’s a fun bet, but not one that I would necessarily take part in.
Another Props to Consider
The list really does go on with these types of prop bets. You can wager on the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach, as well as all kinds of props about the commercials that play during the Super Bowl. If you do want to get in on these wagers, make it a very small part of your overall betting strategy, and be prepared to lose that money to wagers that are little more than a coin flip.
