Calgary vs Edmonton, Game 4 | Stanley Cup Playoffs Expert Analysis & Betting Odds

Why Bet on Calgary?

The Flames were doused 4-1 in Game 3 in Edmonton on Sunday. Oliver Kylington scored his first career playoff goal in the loss. Kylington’s shot seemed to baffle Edmonton netminder Mike Smith who looked awkward on the goal. Kylington has two points in 10 playoff games and was sent up by Dillon Dube and Calle Jarnkrok.

Milan Lucic picked up a major for charging and a game misconduct for his hit behind on the net on Smith., which knocked him out of the game. Lucic might be looking at a suspension. Johnny Gaudreau was trying to can become the fifth player in Flames history to record a playoff point streak of at least eight games but was held off the board.

Jacob Markstrom was pulled after two periods of play, giving up four goals on 34 shots. Markstrom was outstanding in keeping the Flames in the contest as he stopped all 21 shots in the opening period and six of the first seven in the second. He gave up goals to Evander Kane on the next three shots in six minutes in the second and was sent to the bench for the third, replaced by Dan Vladar who stopped all seven Edmonton shots in the third. Markstrom is 5-5 with a 2.65 GAA and a .912 save percentage in these playoffs.

Coach Darryl Sutter shuffled his defensive pairs for Game 3, trying Kylington alongside Erik Gudbranson and partnering Nikita Zadorov with Michael Stone. The coach would have loved to put Chris Tanev’s name on his lineup card, but he missed a fourth straight due to an undisclosed injury.

Less than three weeks ago, the Flames found themselves in a 2-1 series deficit, but rallied to knock off the Dallas Stars in Round 1. And now they’ll have to do the same.

“They have home-ice advantage right now. We have to win one game here to get it back,” Tkachuk said. “We could’ve lost 10-0 (Sunday). We could’ve lost 1-0 in overtime. It’s the same result. We were in this position last series. It’s not that hard of a recipe to figure out — we just have to win one game and get the series tied and go back home.”

Why Bet on Edmonton?

Evander Kane scored a natural hat-trick as part of a four-goal second period, and that was all the offense the Oilers needed in the 4-1 win Sunday. Kane has taken the NHL playoff lead with 10 goals. Only four other players in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) have scored 10 or more goals through their first 10 playoff games with a franchise: Maurice Richard (12 in 1944-45 w/ MTL), Mario Lemieux (11 in 1989 w/ PIT), Ray Ferraro (11 in 1993 w/ NYI) and Dino Ciccarelli (10 in 1989-90 w/ WSH). Kane is the third Oilers player to register a natural hat trick in a postseason game joining Petr Klima (1991) and Wayne Gretzky (1983).

Leon Draisaitl became the first player in NHL history to record four assists in a single playoff period. He also became just the fourth player in Oilers history to record at least four assists in a playoff game, joining Gretzky (8x), Paul Coffey (2x) and Glenn Anderson (0-5—5 in Game 5 of 1987 CF).

Connor McDavid had three assists and leads the league with 23 playoff points. He extended his streak of multi-point playoff games to six contests, a feat only Wayne Gretzky (8 GP in 1983 w/ EDM), Tony Currie (7 GP in 1981 w/ STL), Darryl Sittler (7 GP in 1977 w/ TOR), Evgeni Malkin (6 GP in 2009 w/ PIT) and Dale Hawerchuk (6 GP in 1993 w/ BUF) have accomplished. McDavid is the first player in NHL history with nine multi-point performances through 10 games of a postseason.

The trio of McDavid (23 points), Draisaitl (19) and Kane (13) have combined for 55 points through Edmonton’s first 10 games of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The last time three teammates on any team combined for 55 or more points through 10 playoff games was with the 1988 Oilers, when eight different combinations did so.

Goaltender Mike Smith returned to action after missing 4:15 in the third. Smith appeared to be injured and left the game with 11:25 remaining in the third but returned 4:15 later. He gave up a late goal to Oliver Kylington but stopped 31 of 32 shots for the win to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead. It was Smith’s sixth win of the playoffs and he is 6-3 with a 2.55 GAA and a .933 save percentage.
