First Meeting

Last Wednesday, the Nets beat the visiting Cavs 109-99. James Harden scored 27 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 and Kevin Durant 23. Ricky Rubio led Cleveland with 25 points, Darius Garland added 24 and Kevin Love, Cedi Osman, and Dean Wade each had 11. Cleveland played without center Jarrett Allen (illness), guard Collin Sexton (torn left meniscus), and forwards Evan Mobley (sprained right elbow), Lauri Markkanen (conditioning) and Lamar Stevens (sprained right ankle).

Playing without Kevin Durant on Friday, the Nets had to rally past the awful Orlando Magic, 115-113. James Harden was the clear No. 1 offensive focal point with no Durant and had 36 points with 10 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and two blocks. Although he fell just short of a triple-double, Harden now has double-doubles in five of his last six appearances. During that time, the 32-year-old has averaged 26.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 9.2 assists.

Durant (right shoulder sprain) is available for Monday’s game. He’s averaging 28.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 34.7 minutes per game. KD’s ppg are his third-highest in a season in his career, trailing 2013-14 (32.0 ppg with OKC) and 2009-10 (30.1 ppg with OKC). Durant has posted six points/rebounds double-doubles in 16 games. He posted eight such double-doubles last season (35 games). Durant has maintained his elite level of efficiency this season despite posting the third-highest-usage rate (.305) of his career (highs: .322 in 2013-14 with Oklahoma City when KD earned MVP honors and .311 in 2009-10).

Patty Mills had 22 points in Friday’s win – he’s seeing more time and shots with Joe Harris out injured. Mills has averaged 20.0 points in 33.0 minutes per contest across his last four appearances and has taken on a starting role in each of the last three matchups. Harris had already missed the last three games due to a sprained ankle he suffered Nov. 14, and he hasn’t progressed to the point where the Nets believe he’ll be ready to play until next weekend at the earliest.

Bruce Brown (left hamstring tightness) will not play vs. the Cavs on Monday. Brown got hurt vs. the Magic on Friday and couldn’t return. DeAndre’ Bembry benefits from his absence. Nets head coach Steve Nash said Sunday that center Nicolas Claxton (illness) could need another two weeks to ramp up his conditioning before he’s ready to return to game action. Claxton has been sidelined since late October with an unspecified illness that isn’t related to COVID-19. Paul Millsap is available Monday. Millsap hasn’t played in November due to personal reasons.

The Cavs (9-8) lost their third straight game Thursday, 104-89 vs. Golden State. Stephen Curry scored 20 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter, hitting three straight 3-pointers, and the Dubs overcame a 13-point deficit. Curry made 8 of 12 shots, including 4 of 7 3-pointers, in the final period to help Golden State outscore the Cavaliers 36-8. The Warriors ran off the first 17 points of the quarter to take an 85-81 advantage, holding Cleveland to 12 consecutive empty possessions.

Darius Garland scored a team-high 25 points on 10-of-22 shooting for the Cavs to go with five assists. Garland hit his first five shots and had 18 points on 12 shots through the first half of action, but the Dubs did a nice job of slowing him down after halftime.

Ed Davis looked good in another start on Thursday with 14 rebound and seven points. Davis logged a total of seven minutes through the first 15 games of the season, but with both Jarrett Allen (illness) and Evan Mobley (elbow) going down, Davis has started the past two games and has played relatively well.

Allen is expected back Monday. So is Lauri Markkanen, who has missed the past nine games in COVID protocols. Mobley, an early NBA Rookie of the Year favorite, will miss a few more weeks. Star guard Collin Sexton will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his torn left meniscus.

The Cavs acquired Allen from Brooklyn in a three-team trade on Jan. 14, 2020; Allen was originally drafted by Brooklyn in the 2017 NBA Draft (22nd overall pick) and spent his first three NBA seasons with the Nets (234 games from 2017-2021).

Kevin Love is averaging 14.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG and 2.0 APG in 21.5 MPG since returning to the lineup (2 games). Cleveland enters Monday’s game against Brooklyn allowing 101.7 PPG, which is the 3rd-lowest mark in the NBA this season.
