Top Boxing Events: Conceicao Versus Martinez Main Event on ESPN+

Jeremiah Yeager +1000 vs Nico Ali Walsh -2000

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

So far, Muhammed Ali’s grandson, Nico Ali Walsh, has dominated his opponents. To be fair, Ali Walsh hasn’t fought anyone close to his physical abilities.

But after 3 fights, he has shown that with development, he could turn into a top boxer in his division. Jeremiah Yeager should help Ali Walsh on his way to contender status. Yeager is 1-1-1 while Walsh is 3-0. Yeager drew with 2-5 Leonidas Fowlkes in his last. Expect Nico to end Yeager’s night early.

Boxing Pick: Nico Walsh

Alejandro Rene Frias +1000 vs Giovanni Cabrera -2000

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

18-0 with 7 knockout victories, Giovanni Cabrera just signed a multi-fight deal with Bob Arum and Top Rank a couple of weeks ago. There’s no way Arum is going to let the deal go south, let Cabrera lose, in his first bout. The odds actually make Cabrera an overlay because he should dominate Frias.

There’s a rumor Rafael Reyes replaces Frias in Saturday’s bout. If that happens, Cabrera remains the pick. Reyes is 5’ 5”, Frias is 5’ 8”, and Cabrera is 5’ 9 ½”. So no matter who Cabrera fights on Saturday night, he has a height edge.

Boxing Pick: Giovanni Cabrera

Joey Dawejko +750 vs Stephen Shaw -1500

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

On Jan. 29, 21-9-4 Joey “Tank” Dawejko should serve as a sacrificial lamb to 15-0 Stephen Shaw. The -1500 chalk is 18-0 with 11 knockout wins.

Dawejko has lost 2 of his last 3 and 5 of his last 7. Joey will pick up a nice paycheck by doing his best. But this is nothing more than a fight to make Shaw look good. So if you can find a prop that allows you choose the round that Shaw knocks out Dawejko before backing the favorite to get it done.

Boxing Pick: Stephen Shaw

Jonathan Guidry +800 vs Trevor Bryan -1600

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

The first of two championship fights on Saturday night pits 21-0 WBA Heavyweight titlist Trevor Bryan against Jonathan Guidry. Bryan has won 15 of his bouts via knockout or technical knockout.

Jonathan Guidry has a decent 17-0-2 with 10 KO victories record. But he’s in tough versus the title holder.

At 6’ 4”, the champ is massive. He towers over the 5’ 11” challenger. Not only is Bryan huge, but he’s also a got an excellent jab that he uses defensively to keep his opponents off balance and to set up his thundering power punches. Bryan should easily handle Guidry.

Boxing Pick: Trevor Bryan

Ilunga Makabu -145 vs Thabiso Mchunu +115

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

WBC Cruiserweight Champion Ilunga Makabu isn’t fighting a cupcake on Saturday. Thabiso Mchunu is 23-5 with 13 knockout victories.

In 2019, Mchunu beat highly-regarded Denis Lebedev via unanimous decision. Mchunu has run off 4 straight wins since his last loss in 2018. He’s developed a style that keeps him out of danger and helps him pile up points.

Makabu hasn’t lost since 2016. The champ can win this for sure and the odds are fair, but the chalk hasn’t fought anyone close to Lebedev’s level, which means Mchunu is the best boxer Ilunga Makabu has every fought. Backing the challenger makes sense.

Boxing Pick: Thabiso Mchunu

Robson Conceicao +115 vs Xavier Martinez -145

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 30

Expect championship level action when Robson Conceicao takes on Xavier Martinez on Saturday night. 33-year-old Conceicao is the veteran.

Robson lost his last fight, but it was against 29-0 champion Oscar Valdez. We can’t hold that against him. 24-year-old Martinez is undefeated at 18-0 with 11 knockout wins.

This is Xavier’s toughest fight of his career. But he should prevail because Conceicao’s reaction time against Valdez wasn’t good. Valdez hit Conceicao with lead left hooks and lead rights, which means Oscar was getting through Robson’s defense without having to jab his way inside.

The younger fighter has the edge. At -145, Xavier Martinez also offers fair odds.

Boxing Pick: Xavier Martinez
