There are only three CFL games on tap this weekend, as Thursday’s match between the Edmonton Elks and Toronto Argonauts has been postponed due to Elks players testing positive for COVID-19. After improving to 3-0 last week, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will enjoy their bye week. The Riders are the only undefeated squad in the league, and home teams are a collective 7-5 so far in 2021.
With that said, here are my predictions for the remaining three games in Week 4 of the Canadian Football League so you can get ready to bet against their CFL odds.
2021 CFL Week 4 Betting Preview
Friday, August 27: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Montreal Alouettes
The Ticats have stumbled out of their gate, winless through their first two games. Jeremiah Masoli and the Hamilton offense haven’t been able to put up double digits in each affair, and now face an Alouettes squad that can play on both sides of the ball.
Despite losing to Calgary last week, Montreal’s defense still created two turnovers, and quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and running back William Stanback create a nightmare scenario on the ground for Hamilton’s defense.
Hamilton has yet to play at home, and I expect their road issues to continue in what will be Alouettes’ home opener in downtown Montreal.
The Pick: Montreal Alouettes 27 – Hamilton Tiger-Cats 13
Saturday, August 28: BC Lions at Ottawa RedBlacks
The BC Lions could barely get anything going last week against Edmonton and will look to rebound in the Nation’s Capital. QB Mike Reilly had little protection and Lions receivers had a hard time getting open. They will look to defeat the Ottawa RedBlacks who are coming off their first loss of the season in Saskatchewan.
Starting QB Matt Nichols has only thrown for 247 passing yards so far, and has yet to find the endzone as he continues to adjust to his new team. BC’s defense isn’t any to brag about, wasn’t the reason BC lost last week. Give Reilly better protection, and the Leos will get the job done on Saturday night.
The Pick: BC Lions 23 – Ottawa RedBlacks 21
Saturday, August 29: Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
After staring out the season 2-0, the defending Grey Cup champion Blue Bombers had a let-down game in Toronto last Saturday. The Bombers gave up 300 yards through the air, and 100 on the ground as well. Considering Winnipeg only allowed 13 points combined through the first two weeks of the season, I would bet on the Bombers’ talented defense to bounce back in Week 4 against Calgary and their young backup quarterback.
While the Stampeders did pick up their first win of 2021 last week, Jake Meier threw two interceptions and completed only 55% of his passes. With star QB Bo-Levi Mitchell sidelined for at least the next month, Dave Dickenson’s team is in serious trouble of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Expect Winnipeg to come back with a vengeance and blow out Calgary in the final game of the Week 4 slate.
The Pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 33 – Calgary Stampeders 9
