Unlock Insider Tips: Which Teams Are Set to Dominate This Weekend?

2024 CFL Season | 70th season of the modern professional Canadian football: Canadian Football League
Week 16: Friday, September 20th – Saturday, September 21st, 2024

Betting 2024 CFL Season

After a relatively slow Week 15 in the CFL, the action is going to heat back up in a big way this weekend.

There are four games set to take place, and almost all of them are going to have some sort of massive playoff implications.

Montreal and Ottawa continue to lead the way in the East Division, but things are much tighter in the West.

There is just one team over .500 in that division, and that is going to create some interesting action this weekend.

Here is a look at the games set to take place, along with current odds to win the Grey Cup.

Writer’s Picks to Win Big in Week 16 of the Season

Toronto Argonauts (-6.5) vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The Toronto Argonauts have not been as dominant this season as they have been in recent years, but they still have time to make a big run.

Toronto is favored in this matchup with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and this should end up being an interesting battle.

There will be some big plays made in this game on both sides of things, but at some point the Argonauts will seize control.

This does feel like a big spread for this matchup, but taking Toronto is going to be the way to bet.

CFL Pick: Toronto

Calgary Stampeders vs Saskatchewan Roughriders (-2.5)

The Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders are two of the worst teams in the league this season, and they are set to meet up in Week 16.

This is going to be an interesting matchup, and both of these teams need to find a way to come up with a win.

Saskatchewan is the betting favorite in this game, and they do look like they have been turning things around a little bit.

Jump on the Roughriders with a small spread as they will find a way to get things done.

CFL Pick: Saskatchewan

Montreal Alouettes (-3.0) vs Ottawa Redblacks

The Montreal Alouettes just continue to win games, and they also continue to be favored each week.

This is going to be a challenge against Ottawa though, and this has the potential to be the best game of the weekend.

If you are looking to make an upset prediction then this is a game that you might want to focus on.

Montreal is a really good team, but Ottawa will be motivated to pick up a massive win.

CFL Pick: Ottawa

Edmonton Elks vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-2.0)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to be one of the betting favorites to win the Grey Cup, but they still have plenty to prove.

This will be a great change for Winnipeg to get the job done, and they are going to be playing in a tough environment.

This spread is not very large, and now is the time in which you want to jump on the Blue Bombers to have a great game.

That’s a small spread, and this should be a game in which they win by closer to 10 points.

CFL Pick: Winnipeg

Top Three Grey Cup Favorites that You Should Look Out For

The Montreal Alouettes are the current betting favorites to win the Grey Cup at +208, and they have been in that position most of the season.

The British Columbia Lions are next on the list at +310, and Winnipeg has odds set at +320 to win the title.

Those three teams really stand out from the rest of the pack, but there is time for some things to change.

Grey Cup Contenders in the Hunt

Example of Betting on the Top 2 Teams in the 2024 CFL Standings

Let’s use the top two teams currently leading the standings are the Montreal Alouettes and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Here’s how you might approach betting on a matchup between these two powerhouse teams:

Example CFL Odds:

  • Montreal Alouettes: +120
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers: -140

Interpretation:

  • Montreal Alouettes (+120): If you bet $100 on Montreal and they win, you would earn a profit of $120, plus your original stake back, for a total of $220.
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-140): Betting on Winnipeg would require a $140 wager to win $100. If they win, you’d receive a total of $240 (your stake plus profit).

Betting Strategy:

Given the competitive nature of the matchup, you might analyze team stats, recent performances, and injury reports to make an informed decision.

For example, if Montreal has been strong at home and Winnipeg struggles on the road, you might lean towards betting on the Alouettes.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2019 CFL Week 16 Odds: Winnipeg Blue Bombers -4 ½

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats head into their game against Winnipeg having won 5-of-6 straight up. The Tiger-Cats have gone 3-1-2 against the spread in those 6 games. The last time they battled Winnipeg, they beat the Blue Bombers 23-15 as a +2 home dog.

The Blue Bombers are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games. They’ve gone 4-2 ATS in those 6 matchups. Winnipeg is 8-1 ATS in their last 9 home games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Friday games. This matchup is too close to call, which means trends could mean a lot on Friday night. Go with the Blue Bombers.

CFL Betting Pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Saturday, Sep. 28

Edmonton Eskimos vs Ottawa RedBlacks

2019 CFL Week 16 Odds: TBA

There’s no line yet in this contest because Ottawa has been so awful this season. The RedBlacks are 3-10 SU and 4-9 ATS. They’re a close to unbelievable 1-6 ATS at home. Ottawa hasn’t covered the spread since August 9. That’s five straight weeks of non-covers.

Edmonton is only 2-4 ATS on the road, though. The Eskimos have gone 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games. That includes a cover loss to the RedBlacks on August 9. Once the line is set, consider backing Ottawa. Edmonton hasn’t played much better than the RedBlacks in recent games.

CFL Betting Pick: Ottawa RedBlacks

Saskatchewan Rough Riders vs Toronto Argonauts

2019 CFL Week 16 Odds: Saskatchewan Rough Riders -6 ½

Toronto is 1-4 straight up in their last 5. Against the spread, they’ve been much better, going 2-0-2. Saskatchewan dominated the Argonauts 32-7 in the last matchup. Then again, the Rough Riders have gone 0-3 ATS in their last 3 games. They’re only 3-2 ATS on the road. Take the points.

CFL Betting Pick: Toronto Argonauts

Montreal Alouettes vs BC Lions

2019 CFL Week 16 Odds: BC Lions -6 ½

This line opened at -2 and then quickly jumped to -6 ½ in favor of the BC Lions. Why? Montreal quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. is eligible to play on Oct. 5. Without their quarterback, the Alouettes should find it difficult to keep this one closer than the spread. Lions get the nod.

CFL Betting Pick: BC Lions

Updated 2022 Grey Cup Betting Odds and Top Matches Heading Into Week 16 of the CFL Regular Season

TIER 1: The Favorites

Winnipeg Blue Bombers: +125

Even after an upset loss just last week, they are still posed as the favorite to remain the Grey Cup champs. There is no value in this pick. As a matter of fact I would be worried for them. Two inexcusable losses could cost them big time in the postseason.

B.C Lions: +400

If not Winnipeg, it will likely be the BC Lions hoisting the Grey Cup trophy. After a key divisional win, they look to repeat the same success. If they are able to do that, then I can confidently place my money on BC. Vernon Adams stepped up big time, and we are expecting a later season Nathan Rourke return. This club could easily upset the Bombers!

TIER 2: Middle of the Pack

Toronto Argonauts: +500

The beast from the East is likely going to be in the Grey Cup. The Argos may not be the most glamorous team, but they are most certainly better than Montreal and Hamilton so you could expect them to be the East title holders by the end of the season. The odds are favorable for them at this point.

Calgary Stampeders: +500

Calgary is very intriguing. They do not have many good wins, but they have a few bad losses if you understand. They can keep the game close or blow out the other team. They have not been able to come away with wins against the big dogs. There is value and potential with this team but wait until after this weekend to review the pick.

TIER 3: Down but not out

Saskatchewan Roughriders: +1000

Saskatchewan has huge value. Their next three of four games feature key divisional opponents. Coming away with two of those could prove they are in it to win it. This defense plays well for the most part. But the offense needs to step it up, but they have been injury prone.

Montréal Alouettes: +1500

Montréal is a very interesting case. They could go all the way or they will be in shambles and out of the playoffs. There is a lot of confusion and questions for this team. They are either elite or the worst ball club out there. Too much inconsistency to bet on.

TIER 4: Bottom Feeders

Ottawa Redblacks: +10000 and Hamilton Tiger-Cats: +2500, and Edmonton Elks: +50000

Does anything really need to be said here? Just do not bet on these teams. You are wasting your own money.

Week 16 Best Bets

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Montréal Alouettes (-2.5)

Molson stadium will be bumping, and Hamilton will be struggling in the cold. The Als are an overall better team and will therefore cover this spread but a wide shot. The Tiger-Cats roster is a complete mismatch for the Als.

Previous Betting News

This week may not be as important as the last. We finally have our playoff picture practically set in stone. From the West, the Blue Bombers are the divisional leader and will have a home-field advantage in the playoffs. Following Winnipeg, the Roughriders and Stampeders have qualified for the postseason. From the East, the Argonauts have clinched their divisional title and will also have a home-field advantage.

The Alouettes and Tiger-Cats have also both qualified for postseason play. The only piece of drama for this week is who gets the home game in the East semi-final. It’s either Montreal or Hamilton but we’ll see what happens in the regular-season finale. With that in mind, let’s have a look at the top Canadian Football League games for Week 16 so you can get all set to bet against the CFL odds.

2021 CFL Week 16 Betting Preview

Edmonton Elks vs Toronto Argonauts, NOV 16th @ 7:30 pm

Yes, we do have some Tuesday night football. Seems odd, doesn’t it? Nonetheless, this is the final regular-season game for Toronto and they won’t play until December 5th! This game will consist of no starters for Toronto (most likely) so this is the chance to see how deep this team really is. Even without the starters in for Toronto, the Argos will still manage to pull out this victory and put an exclamation point on what has been a fantastic regular season!

Pick: TOR -4

Ottawa Redblacks vs Montreal Alouettes, NOV 19th @ 7:30 pm

One of two games that will have some meaning this week. Montreal needs this win in order to have a home postseason game. The Reblacks don’t stand a chance in this matchup. The Als have been able to dominate with their depth all season. Montreal has not had a problem adjusting their roster and on Friday night, they most certainly won’t back down for one final game in the 514! This game will be no contest as Montreal looks to add one more home game onto their schedule!

Pick: MTL -14

Edmonton Elks vs BC Lions, NOV 19th @ 10:30 pm

Two teams that have no life beyond this week. Most people on the east coast will be past out and this game won’t be all too exciting. The BC Lions have been fantastic all year and it’s so unfortunate they were unable to reach the playoffs. But hey as they say in Toronto, there’s always next year! This will be Edmonton’s second game of the week! It will really suck to see them lose twice in three days! The Elk has been playing rather poor and that will show on Friday when BC wins one final game for the hometown crowd!

Pick: BC -4.5

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs Hamilton Tigercats, NOV 20th @ 4:00 pm

This is the other game with any playoff impact. Depending on the result from Friday night in Montreal, it will determine how competitive Hamilton will be. Assuming Montreal wins (which they will), you would assume the Tigercats put a bit more effort into this Saturday afternoon matchup. Even with the Roughriders playing conservative, there is reason to doubt Hamilton winning this game! There will be an upset brewing in Ontario and it will be in Hamilton! The Tigercats will get shocked by the Roughriders!

Pick: SSK +3.5

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Calgary Stampeders, NOV 20th @ 7:00 pm

It’s a potential preview of the Western championship game! Both of these teams cannot move their playoff ranking so this game will be all about depth. Winnipeg is the team to beat and even with their backups, they will demonstrate that everyone wants to get some of that winning Manitoba culture! This weekend, the Blue Bombers will get their final win of the regular season as they continue the quest for the first repeat title in the CFL since the Montreal Alouettes!

Pick: WPG -4

CFL Week 16 Betting Preview & Picks

Friday, Sep 28

Toronto Argonauts +13.5 at Calgary Stampeders -13.5

Calgary’s remained the hottest team in the CFL. The Stampeders are 3-1 straight up in their last 4 games. The last time they battled Toronto, they beat the Argonauts 41-7. Does Toronto have a shot to turn the tables on Calgary?

Not likely because Toronto’s gone 0-4 in their last 4 games. The Argonauts have also gone 0-3 against the spread in those last 4 games with no spread assigned to their last game, a 29-30 loss to Saskatchewan.

Toronto just doesn’t matchup well with the best team in CFL

CFL Week 16 Pick: Calgary -13.5

Saturday, Sep 29

British Columbia Lions +7 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats -7

British Columbia and Hamilton just battled on Sep. 22. The Lions beat the Tiger-Cats 35-32. It’s difficult to understand why Hamilton is such a big favorite over BC in the rematch on Saturday.

BC’s 3-3 against the spread in their road games this season while Hamilton is 2-4 against the spread in their home games. The Tiger-Cats should win, but it’s impossible to lay the 7 points when BC just beat Hamilton straight up the week prior.

CFL Week 16 Pick: British Columbia +7

Winnipeg Blue Bombers +6.5 at Edmonton Eskimos -6.5

Winnipeg heads to Edmonton a more than 6 points underdog, but the last time the Blue Bombers battled Edmonton, they only lost by 3, 30-33. Odds makers must feel that Winnipeg returns to the play that led to a 4-game losing streak before their 31-14 home win over Montreal.

The Blue Bombers should improve off the win over Montreal, though, and it’s not like Edmonton’s hot. The Eskimos are 1-3 straight up in their last 4 games. Edmonton shouldn’t do much more in this game than they did in the last battle between these two.

CFL Week 16 Pick: Winnipeg +6.5

Sunday, Sep 30

Saskatchewan Rough Riders -6.5 at Montreal Alouettes +6.5

The spread seems light because Saskatchewan is 8-5 straight up and Montreal is 3-10 straight up, but the Alouettes have been on fire against the spread. Montreal is a fantastic 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.

Ah, but we must study Montreal’s great ATS record with a keen eye. The 2 losses ATS happened in Montreal’s last couple of games. The Alouettes could go right back to be an against the spread doormat on Sunday.

That’s the way to play it. Saskatchewan rules.

CFL Week 16 Pick: Saskatchewan -6.5
