Second choice is 37 year old Geraint Thomas. Is Pogacar unbeatable? What about some of the other contenders like Cian Uijtdebroeks or Lukas Plapp?

Top Pick: Tadej Pogacar -1200

It’s impossible to go against Pogacar. If defending champion Primoz Roglic, 2023 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, or Remco Evenepoel had decided to race at the Giro d’Italia, Pogacar might offer much better odds.

He could still be the chalk, but -1200 is because he faces limited competition. When Pogacar is on, he’s the top cyclist in the world. He had the Tour de France in the bag last year until Vingegaard came up huge in the later stages. Once Tadej starts motoring at the Giro d’Italia, it will be all over but the shouting.

Second Pick: Geraint Thomas +1600

Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France and finished second in the Giro d’Italia last year. He’s for sure one of the better cyclists on the planet. But the 37 year old doesn’t have much shot against Pogacar if Tadej doesn’t run into trouble and keeps his mind on business.

However, if Pogacar suffers a crash during a key stage, or for some reason isn’t up to his usual brilliance, Thomas will be the one to take advantage. As a flyer, the +1600 odds aren’t bad.

Third Pick: Cian Uijtdebroeks +1800

At just 21, the Belgian has a real shot of making a name for himself in cycling. Uijtdebroeks finished eight in his first Grand Tour cycling event, the Vuelta a Espana, last year.

An eighth place finish in your first Grand Tour event is a massive accomplishment. Again, everyone is chasing Pogacar. So if you back Uijtdebroeks to win the Giro d’Italia, remember that something has to happen with Tadej for you to cash. He’s worth a look if you don’t believe Thomas is the one to pick up the pieces should Pogacar falter. 

Top Underdog: Luca Plapp +10000

Plapp won the Australian National Time Trial Championships and the Australian National Road Race Championships earlier this year. He also finished sixth overall in Paris-Nice, which is a nice accomplishment.

After Stage 7 at the Giro d’Italia, Plapp wore the white jersey which goes to the best young cyclist. He has a chance and is an up and comer, but he’s got a long way to go to reach Pogacar’s level. Still, if he does, the +10000 odds will nicely reward his backers.
