Which film at +1000 or less deserves the most attention to win the 2021 Best Picture Oscar?

Dune won’t release until 2021, which means you can’t wager on the movie based on the classic Frank Herbert novel. Like West Side Story’s production company, those who put up the money for Dune want to make sure they get the most bang for their buck. October 21st next year is the new release date.

Without Dune, three movies in the +1000 or less category could grab Oscar glory. The first is Tenet. The Christopher Nolan directed sci-fi/espionage thriller got excellent reviews when it released this past summer.

The Midnight Sky should release in December on Netflix. Like Tenet, the George Clooney directed movie, GC also stars in the film, is a science fiction piece. It figures to garner rave reviews.

But although Tenet and The Midnight Sky will get Best Picture looks, the one favorite that will lock up a Golden Eunuch nomination for sure is Mank. Hollywood loves to talk about its own and Mank is the story of a screenwriter who battled Orson Welles for Citizen Kane writing credits. Some film historians claim Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all-time.

Name movies at +1200 to +2000 odds that can grab a Best Picture Oscar nomination?

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Minari both have excellent shots. The two films have gotten Oscar buzz since being released.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stars Viola Davis as the “Mother of the Blues”. Chadwick Boseman stars as Ma Rainy’s horn player. The movie is based on a play. There’s every indication that Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom grabs nominations for Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture.

Minari is a film about a Korean family that moves to Arkansas to start a farm in the 1980’s. The Academy gave the Best Picture Oscar to the Korean movie Parasite earlier this year. Who knows? Minari could make it two in a row for Korea.

What films at more than +2000 on MyBookie should get Best Picture Oscar consideration?

Nomadland deserves a long look. The film that stars Frances McDormand has gotten the most Oscar buzz of any contender so far this year. Chloe Zhao, a Chinese born director, has her finger on the pulse of America’s heartland.

Zhao also directed The Rider, a 2017 film about a Cowboy who suffers a brain injury. The Academy wants to give Zhao an Oscar. Nomadland is as close to a lock to get a nomination for Best Picture as any film offering odds on MyBookie.
