Early PGA Tour 2022 The Players Championship Odds and Analysis

We are a week away from returning to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, for The Players Championship. Many players spent last week preparing as they head to the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week. Justin Thomas looks to defend his title at TPC Sawgrass.

The total purse of $20 million is a record for the tournament. The winner will take home over $2 million. Let’s take a look at the PGA Tour Betting Odds and names to look out for heading into the tournament.

The Players Championship Betting Predictions and Odds

Justin Thomas 14/1

The defending champion currently has the second-best odds going into The Players Championship. Thomas won the tournament last year with a Sunday score of 68. Thomas won the tournament with a -14 total.

Since the event last year, Thomas has not won another tournament. He is currently ranked seventh in the world and is still playing as one of the best players on tour. Thomas already has three Top-10 finishes this season, his latest coming at The Genesis Invitational.

He may not hit it the furthest or the most accurate, but Thomas has the second-best birdie average on tour. His current birdie average is 5.58. There has never been a back-to-back winner in the history of this tournament. Jack Nicklaus won two in three years.

Jon Rahm 10/1

One of the hottest golfers on the planet and the world’s number one golfer, Jon Rahm, enters with the best odds to win The Players Championship. Rahm is looking for his first win since the U.S. Open. This season already, Rahm has three Top-10 finishes, with his latest coming from the WM Phoenix Open

At last year’s tournament, Rahm finished in a tie for ninth. He finished with a Sunday score of 73, far from his best play. Fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia is a previous champion, and Rahm is looking to become the second to do so.

Rahm is the number one player when it comes to greens in regulation percentage. Rahm has hit 309 of 396 possible greens. Rahm is also towards the top of total driving distance, currently sitting in third place.

Rahm has one career major win, and many consider The Players Championship to be the fifth major in golf.

Rory McIlroy 16/1

A former champion here at TPC Sawgrass is already off to a good start this season with a win at the CJ Cup. McIlroy could join a small group of being a multiple-time winner at TPC Sawgrass. McIlroy won the tournament in 2019.

In his last outing, McIlroy finished tied for tenth at the end of the week. The schedule of play looks limited this season as he has only played in three events, one being this calendar year. McIlroy is currently ranked fifth in the World Golf Rankings and would love the chance to regain the top spot.

Due to his minimal playing status, McIlroy does not have rankings for his stats. What we can share is his birdie percentage of 5.13, which ranks close to that of Justin Thomas. McIlroy is a name to look out for next week at TPC Sawgrass.
