Can Anyone Stop Martin? Betting MotoGP Top Picks for Italy Grand Prix

We have only had 6 races in the 2024 MotoGP season, and it already looks as though we are in for a fun battle for the World Championship.

As it stands now, there are a trio of racers who appear to be pulling away from the pack, but with 15 races still to come this season, we are all well aware that things can change quickly.

My Analysis

Still the 3 racers, all of whom we will discuss in a moment, are very much looking like the guys to beat. This weekend, the action shifts to Italy for the Gran Premio d”Italia Brembo. If things continue the way they are going, then there are some very likely potential winners, so let’s look at the riders who might take the checkered flag in Italy.

Jorge Martin

Last season proved to be a breakout year for Martin, who finished 2nd overall in the World Championship standings. He appears to have taken that experience and carried it over into this season, as he has been fantastic to this point. He was forced to retire from one race earlier in the year, but outside of that, he has not been worse than 4th in the other 5 races, winning 2 of them. All of that has him on 155 points, 39points ahead of his closest rival. He finished 2nd in this race last season, so expect his current form to continue.

Francesco Bagnaia

While the lead at the top is solid, Bagnaia has a history of coming from behind to win a championship, wiping out a 90-point definite to take the crown at one point. This is a man that knows how to win at the highest level, as he has proven by winning back-to-back championships. He proved that he is not out of this thing by a long way and has now won 2 of the last 3 races, giving him a total of 3 wins on the season and 116 total points. He has won this race in each of the last 2 years and has to be considered the favorite here.

Marc Marquez

You do have to say that it is great to see the former champion back in the saddle and taking a run at a championship that he has already won more times than most of us can remember. I for one think the sport is better for having Marquez healthy and once again making a challenge for the top prize. He is currently sitting 2 points back of Bagnaia at the moment, so finishing ahead of his rival this weekend could see him make an upward move in the standings. Can he keep that challenge alive with a solid showing this weekend? A top 3 finish seems like a good bet here.

Enea Bastianini

As we mentioned at the top of this piece, the top 3 racers are opening up a gap on the rest of the pack. While Bastianini is currently sitting 4th overall, he is already 20 points behind Marquez in 3rd, with that gap seeming to grow with each passing week. I think it’s fair to say that while he has been consistent this season, Bastianini needs a win if he is to get in among the pack battling for a World Championship. He finished 9th in this race last season and needs a much better showing this weekend.

2023 MotoGP Italian Grand Prix

We are just 5 races into the 2023 MotoGP season, but it already looks as though we are in for a great championship battle. As it stands right now, there is just 1 point separating the top 2 racers, while those ion 3rd and 4th are not that far off the pace being set by the top 2. This weekend, we see the action shift to Italy for the next race on the calendar, and while it is still very early in the season, the pressure is always on to pick up points and stay in the hunt for the ultimate prize. Any of the riders taking part can win this one, but we are going to focus on the current top 4, as that is where the winner might well be most likely to come from. With that in mind, take a look at the analysis to consider betting against MotoGP odds.

Francesco Bagnaia

When you consider that Bagnaia has been forced to retire in 2 of the 5 races this season, it might seem surprising that he is currently sitting atop the rider standings. It certainly helps that he has won 2 of the other 3 races, but he is going to need to stop leaving points out on the track if he is to stay on top and win his 2nd straight World Championship. The good news for Bagnaia is that he make a habit of winning when he does get to complete a race, which is exactly what he did in the 2022 version of this one. If he can finish, you have to like his chances.

Marco Bezzecchi

If you are trying to win a championship and see the current champ fail to finish, you need to find a way to grab some points and put the pressure on. That is exactly what Bezzecchi did in France last weekend, taking the checkered flag in a race that Bagnaia retired from, and moving to within a point of the overall lead. Given that this is just his 2nd full season at this level, where he finished 14th overall last season, you do have to wonder if he can maintain his fast start. He was top 5 in Italy last season, so definitely worth a look.

Brad Binder

In his first 3 full seasons at this level, Binder has managed just 2 wins, but his overall finish has gotten progressively better. Even at this early stage, he is already ahead of the pace he set in the last 2 years, where he finished 6th overall both times, as he is currently in 3rd overall. He has yet to pick up a win this season, but he has completed every single race, which means that he continues to pick up valuable points. Realistically, though, he needs a win or two along the way, which means improving on his 7th place finish in this race in 2022.

Jorge Martin

In his first 2 seasons racing in MotoGP, Martin has been good without being spectacular. He has just 1 win in those 2 seasons and finished 9th overall in both. There are some signs that he might be able to improve on that this season, though, as he is currently in 4th and well within reach of the leader. Martin was forced to retire in 2 races this season, but in the other 3, he has been no worse than 5th. Those are signs that he might just hang around here.
