Grand Prix of Japan: Jorge Martin to Win? – See the Expert Picks & Analysis

Time is running out on the MotoGP season, with just 5 races remaining before we crown a champion.

At this stage of the proceedings, it is looking as though we are getting down to a 2-horse race, with the defending champion going against a very strong challenger, which is something we will get into in a moment.

MotoGP Betting Favorites at Grand Prix of Japan
1. Jorge Martin | 366 points
2. Francesco Bagnaia | 345 points
3. Enea Bastianini | 291 points
4. Marc Marquez | 288 points

My Analysis of the Grand Prix of Japan

There are 21 points separating the top 2 riders, who have opened up a bit of a gap on the other drivers.

There are a couple who could still make a move, but they would probably need to be perfect through the final 5 races to make it happen.

Either way, they will all be on the track in Japan this weekend looking to pick up some valuable points, so let’s look at the potential contenders.

Jorge Martin

With the end of the season now very much in sight, this is when we will get to see what Martin is made of.

His last championship win came at the Moto3 level, so this would be his first at the top level if he is able to hold on.

Truth be told, it certainly looks as though he is up to the challenge, as he has a win and no less than four 2nd place finishes over his last 6 races.

That is championship winning form, but as we mentioned earlier, it is not a huge lead, so he needs to maintain that form.

I think he can do that in Japan, as he won this race last season.

Francesco Bagnaia

In the first half of the season, it certainly looked as though Bagnaia was going to roll to his third straight world championship.

He picked up 7 wins through the first 11 races, but he has since failed to win in the last 4.

Making things even worse for the champion is that he has been forced to retire in 2 of those last 4 races, which means zero points.

In a race this tight at the top, you simply cannot afford to leave points out on the track.

Bagnaia was 2nd in this race last season and looks to be a good top 3 pick.

Enea Bastianini

It looked as though Bastianini was about to make things interesting with a win a couple of weeks back, but he then followed up that victory with a failure to finish in the last race.

With the riders ahead of him both picking up big points in that one, he essentially lost all the ground he made up with the win at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Bastianini missed out on this race last season, so it’s tough to predict how he might perform in Japan.

Marc Marquez

While he is ultimately going to miss out on the world championship this season, it has been good to see Marquez fully fit and back up among the leaders in 2024.

After back-to-back wins and another podium finish, Marquez lost some ground last weekend when he was forced to retire from the race.

Recent form, as well as a podium finish in Japan last season, suggests that he could be on the podium again this weekend.

Another big race weekend is upon us, with MotoGP heading to Japan for the next race on the schedule. Including this one, there are now 7 races remaining in the 2023 season, with the championship battle heating up. The recent races have seen the gap at the top close rather dramatically, which means that every single point up for grabs is becoming more and more valuable with each passing race. It does look as though we are heading into a 2-horse race, but there is one rider who might make it even more interesting.

Francesco Bagnaia

For a while, it looked as though Bagnaia was going to cruise to his second straight world championship without too much trouble, but recent results have put that very much in doubt. It all began with him missing a race in Spain, which he followed with a podium finish in San Marino, only to be forced to retire in the last race. Those 2 missed races mean that he left a lot of points out on the track, allowing the chasing racers to draw a little closer. Right now, Bagnaia maintains a 13-point lead at the top, so he really needs something from this one to stay in the lead. He won in Japan in 2018, but that was at the Moto2 level.

Jorge Martin

Martin has really made things interesting by picking up big points in the 2 races where Bagnaia had none. He had a win in San Marino, bookmarking that victory with a pair of podium finishes to get withing striking distance of the overall lead. That’s a great return to form after a disappointing 3-race run that seemed to have taken him out of the championship picture. This just shows you how quickly things can change. Martin had a top 3 finish in Japan last year and needs more of the same to keep the pressure on at the top.

Marco Bezzecchi

This is where things really begin to get interesting, as Bezzecchi is still close enough to be a threat, although he needs a great run of form to hit in the final 7 races of the season. He is certainly on the way to doing that, finishing 2nd in San Marino, followed by a win in India in the last race on the schedule. The problem he has now is that he did not have a very good run in Japan last year, finishing in 10th in that race. He will need to be a whole lot better this time around if he is to stay with the top 2.

Brad Binder

Binder is 4th in the standings, and while that would certainly be a very decent accomplishment, there is probably no way that he can break into the top 3 at this point. The problem for Binder is that he can’t get over the hump and get his first win at the MotoGP level, with his last victories coming in Moto2. That said, he might be a good bet to land on the podium this weekend, especially when you consider that he was 2nd in Japan last year.
