MotoGP Odds: Grande Prémio de Portugal Betting Analysis & Favorites to Win this 2024 Season

The 2024 MotoGP season is already underway, with the opening race of the year now officially in the books.

While it may be a new season, things are off to a rather predictable start, with Francesco Bagnaia winning the opening race of the season in Qatar as he goes in search of a 3rd straight World Championship. It was certainly the start that the defending champ would have been hoping for, but there are several other racers who are sure to be in the hunt as they all look to prevent Bagnaia turning his career into something of a dynasty. There were some familiar names finishing in the top 4 in the opening race of the year, so let’s take a look the MotoGP betting analysis at all of those riders as we try to figure out how things might play out this weekend in Portugal.

Francesco Bagnaia

As we already mentioned, it was no real surprise to see the 2-time defending champion get his season off to a winning start, as he did that last year, too. Funnily enough, his opening win in 2023 came in Portugal, where the Grand Prix will be taking place this weekend, so he has a positive history on this particular track. If there is something that might put you off wagering on him to win this weekend, it might well be that while he won the championship in some style last season, he was never able to deliver back-to-back wins. Is that a trend that will carry on over into this season?

Brad Binder

Binder has now completed 4 full seasons at the top level in MotoGP, but he is still looking for his first career win. While he has yet to take a checkered flag at this level, he has had some close calls and has also seen his overall finish get progressively better. Last season, Binder finished 4th overall and there is a sense that he is on the brink of taking that next step. Getting a win in the early part of the season would go a long way to making that prediction seem solid. He opened with a 2nd place finish in Qatar and will be looking to improve on his 6th place finish in Portugal last year.

Jorge Martin

2023 was the 3rd full season in MotoGP for Martin and is one that needs to be considered a breakout year for the Spanish racer. He finished 2nd overall, taking a big step forward from his 9th place finishes in the previous 2 seasons. The question now is whether 2023 was a flash in the pan or a sign of bigger things to come. Martin got this season off to a very decent start, landing on the podium with a 3rd place finish in Qatar in Race 1 of the season. He has been forced to retire in the last 2 seasons in Portugal.

Marc Marquez

It has been a rough couple of years for one of the best riders this sport has ever seen. Marquez, a 7-time World Champion, has battled injuries that have prevented him from racing on a regular basis, but he appears to be coming into 2024 with a clean bill of health. Getting out to a fast start to the new season was probably at the top of his list, and while he did not land on the podium in Qatar, he did have a respectable 4th place finish. It’s tough to know what to expect from him this weekend, but I would be tempted to take Marquez to finish on the podium.

2023 Grande Prémio de Portugal Betting Analysis

MotoGP returns to the motorsport fan’s television this weekend. The 2023 MotoGP season begins this weekend at the Portimao Circuit in the Algarve region of Portugal.

While the MotoGP series doesn’t get the attention that Formula One does in America, the racing is often even more compelling. The combination of massive engines, aerodynamic riders, and unbanked turns leads to edge-of-your-seat racing.

The 2023 season could be a make-or-break season for the MotoGP series. Let’s learn more about what to look for in the upcoming MotoGP betting season.

Creating Greater Interest in MotoGP

The audience for motorsports in the United States is growing. With the recent success of Formula One finding younger audiences to tap into in America, other motorsports competitions like MotoGP are eager to find a way to reach the American audience and gain their attention.

Following in Formula One’s footsteps, MotoGP partnered with Amazon to create MotoGP Unlimited, a documentary-style series on the racers and teams. Unfortunately, it didn’t generate the same interest as Drive to Survive, and Amazon canceled it after one season.

Wanting to put a fresh spin on the series after a couple of down years due to the pandemic, MotoGP conducted a fan survey to find out what fans wanted. The fans said they wanted more racing, so MotoGP added sprint races to race weekends this year.

The sprint races will be on Saturday after the qualifying sessions. The starting grid is set based on the qualifying sessions at the beginning of the weekend. Since the race is only half the length of the Sunday Grand Prix, riders will get half the points of a regular Grand Prix race. This new format, popular in other motorsports, should add more drama and excitement to MotoGP race weekends.

A Loaded Field in 2023

The 2022 MotoGP season gave fans a dramatic ending. Champion Francesco (Pecco) Bagnaia made up a deficit of 91 points from the midseason point to win the season title spectacularly in Valencia. He is the first Italian rider to win the points title since the legendary Valentino Rossi in 2009.

This year’s field of riders may be one of the most talented ever. Eleven former World Champions are starting, including eight-time champion Marc Marquez. Marquez is attempting to reclaim his spot on top after an injury-plagued 2022. 2021 champion Fabio Quartararo will also be eager to prove that he can finish a season as champion after blowing a big lead to Bagnaia over the second half of the season.

On the constructor side of things, Ducati’s dominance should continue, based on the prevalence of Ducatis in the field. Last year, they were responsible for one-third of the bikes in the starting grid.

For this weekend’s race in Portugal, look for Bagnaia and Quartararo to run well and pick up where their duel left off last season. Those two riders will both want to prove themselves for different reasons after 2022’s season finale, and they’ll look to start the season off strong this weekend.
