Thursday evening represents an absolutely humongous slate of college basketball games, and while few move the needle any more than a couple of notches, there is still money to be made. Here are the Best Bets College Basketball for Thursday, February 2nd.
Florida Atlantic Owls (-1) at UAB Blazers
This wager is a bit contrary to what we typically hunt for with these best-bet articles, but the trends do support an FAU cover. These two teams played once this season when the Owls defeated the Blazers by just two on their own court. However, that loss has seemingly sent Andy Kennedy’s club into a bit of a tailspin. UAB has since won just three of their seven games since, though they have logged two consecutive victories, albeit against Rice and Louisiana Tech.
Florida Atlantic continues to be one of the most intriguing teams in the nation this season, with a 21-1 record overall. They are also currently the best team in the nation against the spread, covering 79% of the time so far this season. On the road, FAU has been just as impressive, covering in seven of their nine true road games this season and defeating the spread by +5.0 points per game with a margin of victory of +9.2, which is a great number on the road.
Bringing even more attention to this game is the fact that UAB is one of the worst teams in Conference USA at home against the spread, with a record of 4-7-1. They are underperforming the number by -1.2 points per game. Something that could act as a sort of red flag is the fact that the Blazers have a margin of victory north of 17 points per game at home. I am still flying with the Owls.
Houston Cougars (-12.5) at Wichita State Shockers
We may as well go against the grain with both of these best bets, don’t you think? Here we have another home underdog hosting the best team in their conference. Not only is Houston the best team in the American, but they are also the best road team against the spread in the American, as they have yet to log a loss against the spread. The 6-0 ATS Cougars are outperforming the spread by over seven points per game on the road with a margin of victory of nearly seventeen points per contest.
On the flip side of that coin, Wichita State has been dreadful against the spread at home this season at just 3-9 ATS while underperforming the number by -4.2 points per contest. The Shockers have performed better recently against the spread but have also dropped four of their last six home games straight up.
It should also be noted that five-star freshman forward Jarace Walker has been absolutely lighting it up lately.. The 6’8 blue-chipper is averaging nearly 17 points and eight rebounds over his last six games played. The Shockers are also one of the worst teams in the American at keeping teams off of the offensive glass, ranking ninth out of eleven. The Cougars are the best team in the conference in offensive rebounding percentage.
This game has blowout written all over it.
