With all of the hype surrounding the NFL and the College Football seasons, the college basketball season has snuck up on us. In taking a look at the slate of college basketball games on Tuesday night, we’ve found a couple of games for you to look at and maybe place a wager or two on them.
College Basketball Night
Duke Blue Devils vs. Kansas Jayhawks
This is going to be a very intriguing matchup from the Champion’s Classic in Indianapolis. Kansas, the defending national champions, come into this one ranked fifth in the country, while Duke is the seventh-rated team in the polls. There will be a lot of storylines surrounding this one, as we have coaching issues and injuries to some key players.
First off, we’ll talk about the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas has yet to be tested in its wins over Omaha and North Dakota State. Head coach Bill Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend didn’t coach in either of those games and won’t be on the sideline on Tuesday night, as they’re serving a five-game, NCAA-imposed suspension. That could give an edge to Duke.
Duke has also yet to be challenged this season. They’ve cruised to victories over Jacksonville and USC Upstate. This is the first time that Jon Scheyer has even been a head coach, so we’ll see how he handles tough situations.
One of Duke’s five-star freshmen, Dariq Whitehead, has yet to play this season and probably won’t suit up on Tuesday. Another five-star freshman, Dereck Lively, has played just 14 minutes this season due to injury. He will play on Tuesday, but we’re not sure how much action he’ll see.
This will be an interesting line to watch. Duke is led by Jeremy Roach at the guard position, and the Blue Devils will have one of the best frontcourts in the country.
We’ll see how Roach and company handle the new trapping defensive system that Self has employed at Kansas. While we think that Duke may be a slight favorite, we’re really not sure.
We’re giving the edge to the Blue Devils in this one, but monitor the spread. If Kansas is favored, we really like Duke to win the game. If the Devils are favored, take note of how big the spread is.
Kentucky Wildcats vs. Michigan State Spartans
With wins over Howard and Duquesne, the Kentucky Wildcats enter their Champion’s Classic matchup with Michigan State with a 2-0 record.
Michigan State, coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Gonzaga last Friday, enters the contest at 1-1. These two will meet in the opener of the made-for-television event on Tuesday night.
Like many of John Calipari’s Kentucky teams of the past, the Wildcats usually don’t mesh until later in the season. This could be the case with this team. While they’ve won their two games easily, they’re still getting used to one another.
As for Michigan State, last Friday’s loss will be a learning experience. Michigan State really doesn’t have a go-to player, but they are very experienced, and that could come in big on Tuesday night. They had the lead over Gonzaga for most of the game, but they couldn’t close the game out, and they let Gonzaga take the lead late.
We see Kentucky being favored in this one by anywhere from four to seven points. We really think this is going to be a tight one. If Kentucky is favored by too many points, we’d go with the Spartans in this one.
