Series History

The two teams will meet for the 218th time on Tuesday, the most-frequently played rivalry in the Big Ten. Purdue owns a 125-92 series advantage, but Indiana has won three of the last four meetings. However, before that, Purdue won 12-of-13 meetings from February 2014 to March 2021.

Why Bet on Purdue Boilermakers?

No. 2 Purdue (15-2) was shocked 88-72 at Nebraska last Tuesday but bounced back with a 95-78 home rout of Penn State on Saturday. Five points from Kanye Clary helped Penn State get out to a 10-8 lead as the Nittany Lion defense forced four early Purdue turnovers and PSU held the slim edge just under five minutes into the game. The Boilermakers answered with a 31-5 streak over the next 7:09 behind 11-for-12 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 mark from 3-point range as Purdue put the Nittany Lions in a 39-15 hole with 8:14 left in the first half. The game was over at that point.

Boilers star and National Player of the Year favorite Zach Edey recorded his second career game of at least 30 points and 20 rebounds, when he had 30 points, 20 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. His two career 30-20 games are the second most in school history (Terry Dischinger – 3; 1960-62). He is the first player nationally to reach 30-20 in a game this season.

He is just one of three players since 2010-11 to have at least 30 points, 20 rebounds, three assists and three blocks in a game (Feb. 2019 – South Dakota State‘s Mike Daum, Dec. 2022 – Chattanooga‘s Jake Stephens). Edey recorded his 10th career 30-10 game, the most for an active player by six games (Hunter Dickinson – 4). It’s the most for a Big Ten player in the last 15 years by five games (Luka Garza – 5). It was also his 49th career double-double.

Edey has now scored in double-figures in 68 straight games, tied for the third-longest streak for a major-college player since the 2002-03 season. In Big Ten play only, Edey is averaging 23.0 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 2.2 assists, while shooting 71.6 percent from the field.

“He’s here and he’s obviously a special player, but he’s also one of those guys,” coach Matt Painter said of Edey. “If you’ve faced him, he’s hard to prepare for. You can watch him on film, but you don’t realize how strong he is.”

Braden Smith dished out a career-high 11 assists, his third game this year of 10 or more assists, tied for the second most in the country. Smith is now averaging 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game. His three games of 10 or more assists are the most for a Purdue player since 1987.

Purdue’s 95 points in regulation were its most against a Big Ten team since scoring 104 against Iowa on Feb. 5, 2020. The 56 first-half points were also the most since scoring 61 in that same Iowa game. Purdue won its 117th straight game when scoring at least 90 points, dating to Nov. 24, 1987, vs. Iowa State. It is 81-3 since the start of the 2017-18 season when scoring at least 80 points.

Purdue ranks in the NCAA’s top 20 in rebound margin (7th), assists per game (8th), 3-point percentage (9th), scoring offense (14th), fewest fouls per game (15th), scoring margin (15th), field goal percentage (16th) and assist / turnover ratio (18th). It leads the country in quad-1 wins (6) and quad-1 and 2 wins combined (9). Purdue has as many quad-1 wins as teams ranked No. 4 (Alabama), 5 (BYU), 6 (Tennessee) and 8 (Auburn) combined.

Painter won his 213th Big Ten game last time out, now needing just one win to tie Illinois‘ Lou Henson for fifth (214) on the Big Ten-games only victories list. Purdue is 15-2 or better for the third straight season. The Boilers are 44-36 in Big Ten road games since the 2015-16 season, the sixth-best road record among major-conference teams in the country. Purdue is 8-5 in Big Ten road games since the start of last season.

Why Bet on Indiana Hoosiers?

Indiana (12-5) has alternated wins and losses over its past five following a 74-62 home win against Minnesota on Friday. The Hoosiers led by 10 at the break and made 7-of-9 field goals out of the locker room to build a 58-37 advantage and that was largely that. The Gophers, who were just 23-of-59 (.390) from the field and 3-of-20 (.150) from long-range, got within 11 points late, but the Hoosiers made free throws down the stretch the secure their seventh-straight win in the series. d IU again showed signs of how good it can be if it can play as well on the road as it does at home, where it’s 9-1 overall.

“You saw the intensity,” center Kel’el Ware said. “If we bring that to every game, we’ll be good.”

The Hoosiers got a second straight double-double from Ware, who is up to seven this season. He had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Since the turn of the new year, Ware is averaging 11.8 rebounds and has posted three double-doubles.

They got impressive play from forwards Mackenzie Mgbako (a career-high 19 points, four rebounds) and Malik Reneau (16 points, six rebounds, three assists) and from guard Trey Galloway (10 points, seven assists). Mgbako, a freshman, reached double figures for the second-straight game, and 10th time in 12 games. Mgbako has converted a team-high 22 3-point attempts this season, including 14 during his last six outings. Over the six-game sample, the McDonald’s All-American is averaging 11.5 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Galloway has recorded 37 assists to just 10 turnovers in his last six games.

Overall, IU shared the ball (17 assists) and forced the issue (a 16-10 edge in points off turnovers). It led for 39 minutes and 42 seconds, and never trailed. Defensively, the Hoosiers forced 14 turnovers and held Minnesota to 39.0% shooting.

Indiana averages 38.2 points per game in the paint and shoots 53.3% (369-of-692) from inside the arc. The Hoosiers hold opponents to 27.2 points per night in the key. IU gets to the charity stripe 23.8 times per game, the 26th most among all Division I programs and the third-highest figure in the Big Ten.

Indiana is 41-9 during Coach Mike Woodson’s tenure when allowing less than 70 points, including a mark of 8-1 during the 2023-24 season. For Tuesday, Woodson is 3-1 against the Boilermakers since taking over in 2021. Indiana’s success has been unprecedented during the Woodson era.

It’s been more than three years since Purdue has won at Assembly Hall. They beat Archie Miller for the seventh straight time on Jan. 14, 2021. Miller never once beat Purdue during his four years of mismanaging the Indiana program, going 0-7.

Assembly Hall will undergo a White Out on Tuesday for the first time since defeating No. 18/15 North Carolina by a score of 77-65 on Nov. 30, 2022.
