There were a lot of people who had the #7 seeded Rhode Island Rams losing to #10 Oklahoma in the opening round, and there were several times in that game where the upset prediction looked to be a good one. That was the early game that I focused on yesterday afternoon and it was an incredibly fun one to take in, as the lead seemed to change every 2 or 3 minutes. In the end, OT was required, and it was the Rams who got the job done with an 83-78 win. While they weren’t able to keep Trae Young (28 points) in check, the Rams offense did enough to win, spreading out the scoring in the same way that they have done all season long. Why bet on the Duke Blue Devils?
The Duke Blue Devils had their opening round game against Iona in the bag at half-time, with Grayson Allen hitting a 3-pointer at the half to put an exclamation point on an impressive 53-39 showing. It was the Duke starters who accounted for all 53 points in the opening half, but they got a little bit of rest in the second, as Duke used their bench guys to cruise to an 89-67 win that was as comfortable as the final score suggests.
Things are going to get tougher for Duke as this tournament progresses, but the offense that they are bringing to the table on any given night is one that any team they face is going to have a tough time shutting down. Allen gets a lot of the press, but Marvin Bagley III is also a beast, averaging over 21 PPG this season. It was Bagley who was the top scorer for Duke in round 1.
