Why Bet on Alabama State?

Alabama State is a SWAC school that plays in the lower-level FCS. The Hornets opened their season with a 26-20 upset of Tuskegee in the Labor Day Classic. Alabama State ended a six-year drought when Ezra Gray took a handoff and outran everyone down the left sideline to give Alabama State the overtime win. Redshirt sophomore Darryl Pearson needed only one game to break his career high of 126 passing yards last season against Texas Southern, as he posted a 164-yard effort. He also chipped in with 21 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Senior defensive back Kurron Ramsey was all over the field in the contest, as the quarterback of the secondary finished with a career-high 14 total tackles, eclipsing his game-high of 12 a season ago. The Hornets, who trailed most of the game, sent the game into overtime when Pearson scored on a quarterback keeper with 5:09 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 20-all. Alabama State won for the first time in six years in the season opener, with the last coming against Mississippi Valley State in 2011 – a 41-9 victory. The win also was the first against Tuskegee since the same season, a season in which the Hornets finished 8-3. Special teams were huge last week. Defensive lineman Christian Clark blocked, recovered and returned a blocked field goal 50 yards in overtime to set up the Hornets’ game-winning TD. Meanwhile, Gray returned three kickoffs for 118 yards, including a long of 72, and Hunter Hanson was 2 of 3 on field goals, with his only miss coming on a 53-yarder. Anthony Craven averaged 45 yards per punt, including a long of 63 yards. Donald Hill-Eley took over as the interim coach of Alabama State in the second half of last season and led the Hornets to a 5-1 record. Alabama State returns nine starters from a unit that led the SWAC in scoring and total defense, so they have the talent to be good this season, even after giving up 482 yards last week.

Why Bet on Auburn?

Auburn beat No. 9 Washington 21-16 despite 12 penalties for the Tigers. Auburn’s 12 penalties were the most by the Tigers since the 2014 Ole Miss game (13); in records back through 1996, the most recorded was 15 penalties vs. Florida in 2002. The running game also wasn’t great. Kam Martin had a workmanlike 80 yards on 22 carries. Redshirt freshman JaTarvious Whitlow had the most important run of the day — what turned out to be a game-winning 10-yard touchdown — but produced 18 yards on his other seven carries. Auburn had under 150 rushing yards in the season opener for just the second time of Gus Malzahn’s head coaching tenure and only the third time in the last decade, albeit against a considerably more difficult opponent than in most of those years. Malzahn offenses at Auburn own four of top five rushing seasons and the top six total offense seasons in program history. Alabama State at Auburn should be an easy one for the Tigers. Only two schools have produced at least one 1,000-yard rusher each season since 2009: Auburn (11) and Boise State (9). Auburn is tied with Nevada for the most 1,000-yard rushers since 2009 among FBS teams with 11. Jarrett Stidham completed 26 of 36 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown vs. Washington. With seven receptions, Ryan Davis has 116 for his career, good for seventh on the Auburn career receptions list. He passed Rodgerquis Smith (114 from 2004-08) and Darvin Adams (115 from 2008-10). It was the fourth time in the last decade that Auburn threw for over 250 yards in the season opener. Defensively, Auburn ranks 30th in red zone defense after holding Washington to three field goals and one touchdown on six trips. Eight of the top 12 tacklers return from the 2017 defense that finished 11th in scoring defense (18.5) and 14th in total defense (319.4).
