The Orange (4-3) are certainly confident right now after a 27-24 stunning upset of No 2 Clemson last Friday. That was so impressive that some experts think Coach Dino Babers might be snapped up by a better program this offseason. Junior quarterback Eric Dungey engineered the victory, completing 20-of-32 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 21 times for 61 yards to finish with 339 of Syracuse’s 440 yards of total offense. Entering Friday’s game, Clemson was holding opponents to 264.3 yards of total offense per contest. Syracuse was a combined 10-of-21 (.476) on third- and fourth-down conversions against the Tigers. The Orange controlled the ball for 34:52, a season-best mark for time of possession. Dungey now ranks fourth in program history with 6,057 career passing yards. The third-year signal caller has 188 completions in 2017, which ranks sixth in Syracuse single-season history It was SU’s first victory over an opponent ranked that high in the Associated Press poll since the team’s historic 1984 triumph against No. 1 Nebraska. It was the ninth time in Syracuse program history the Orange faced the defending national champions and the third time the team came out on top. The victory ended Clemson’s 11-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the nation. If the Orange can beat the Hurricanes, it would mark the first time in program history Syracuse would have beaten Top 10 teams in back-to-back games. WR Steve Ishmael has been selected to the Associated Press Midseason All-America Team. Ishmael leads the nation with 62 receptions for 802 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks second in the FBS in receptions per game (8.9) and third in receiving yards and receiving yards per game (114.6). The Hurricanes (5-0) have won their last two games by a total of five points, including a 25-24 home win against Georgia Tech their last time out. A week after Darrell Langham scored the game-winning touchdown with six seconds left at Florida State, Langham hauled in a pass on fourth-and-10 from the Miami 43 and turned it into a 28-yard gain for a first down and gave the Hurricanes life. Four plays later, Michael Badgley hit a game-winning 24-yard field goal to beat the Jackets. RB Travis Homer was outstanding in his first career start for the Hurricanes, finishing with a career-high rushing 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. The sophomore averaged 8.5 yards per carry. The Hurricanes moved up three spots from No. 11 to No. 8 in the Associated Press rankings and three spots from No. 10 to No. 7 in the Amway Coaches Poll. The rankings are the highest for Miami since Week 9 of the 2013 season, when the Hurricanes were ranked No. 7 by the AP and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll. The Hurricanes entered the season ranked in both preseason polls for the first time since 2010.
In his first year as the starter, QB Malik Rosier has passed for 1,371 yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions. The Miami defense is allowing 18.6 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the ACC. Linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and safety Jaquan Johnson sit atop the Miami tackle chart with 35 and 34 stops, respectively.
The Canes could get a few injured starters back here. Wide receiver Ahmmon Richards, who did not play Saturday because coach Mark Richt said he still wasn’t fully ready to compete with that nagging hamstring injury, has been practicing. So has safety Sheldrick Redwine (upper extremity), who came out of the FSU game in the third quarter and missed the Georgia Tech game.
