Texas at Oklahoma State NCAA Football Week 9 Lines & Preview

Written by on October 26, 2018

We are all a little guilty of making snap judgments about a team based solely on the outcome of a single game. For example, one bad loss in college football will have us all instantly declaring that the loser has no shot at a national title. While this is very often the case, it is also sometimes dependent upon when that loss comes. You look at Ohio State getting pounded by Purdue last week and you see a Buckeyes team that is almost certainly not going to the playoffs. If you go all the way back to Week 1 of the season, you probably remember writing off Michigan and Texas after they lost their season opener, yet they are both now very much in the playoff conversation after going unbeaten ever since.

The Texas Longhorns signaled their intent when they took out Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago, and while they have an inside track to the Big 12 Championship Game, they will know that there is still work to be done. They have a tough trip to Stillwater this weekend to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys as a 3 ½ point favorite. The point total for this one is set at 61 ½.

Why bet on the Texas Longhorns?

While you have to applaud the way in which Texas has bounced back after losing to Maryland in Week 1, you still need to be aware that just one more loss this season will knock them out of playoff contention. The Longhorns are certainly deserving of their #6 ranking, but you can also say that they have had it somewhat easy given that 5 of their 7 games this season have been played at home.

Texas has been perfect in their own building, but this may be their first real road test of the season. That said, the Longhorns are 8-1 SU in their last 9 visits to Stillwater and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 trips there. This is perhaps the weakest Cowboys team that they have faced in a while, so they need to make sure not to look beyond this game.

Why bet on the Oklahoma State Cowboys?

We have become accustomed to seeing the Cowboys be one of the most dominant offensive forces in the league, and while they are a little off the pace they usually set, this is still a team that is averaging close to 40 PPG this season. The Cowboys aerial attack has been solid once again, but it is their ground game that has really stood out this year, with the RB’s delivering over 200 YPG on the ground.

Texas at Oklahoma State is going to be a battle.

They are probably going to look to wear down a Longhorns defense that is surrendering over 125 YPG on the ground this season. If they can have some success there, we could be in for a close one. The Cowboys have won 5 of their last 7 and 18 of their last 25 games at home.
