NY Jets at Cleveland Week 5 Odds, Preview & NFL Betting Pick

Written by on October 4, 2017

When the 2017 schedule was released in April, this week’s Jets-Browns matchup looked like the worst of them all – perhaps the only chance for one of these teams to avoid 0-16. The Browns are terrible, but New York is shockingly 2-2. Cleveland is a short betting favorite on the NFL odds. But it’s hard to say their are the definitive NFL betting pick for Week 5. That’s what we’re about to find out!

New York won in Cleveland 31-28 in Week 8. Matt Forte ran for 82 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns. Ryan Fitzpatrick, now with Tampa Bay, threw for 222 yards and a touchdown. Then-Browns QB Josh McCown passed for 341 yards with two touchdowns to Andrew Hawkins and two interceptions. McCown is now the Jets’ starting quarterback and Hawkins is long gone.  The Jets managed all of 106 yards while getting thoroughly outplayed in the first half. New York trailed 20-7 at the break.

New England at Tampa Bay Week 5 NFL Betting Odds & Pick for TNF

Why Bet On NY Jets?

Who would have believed the Jets would have the same record as the New England Patriots through four weeks? The Jets beat visiting Miami 20-6 two weeks ago week and then beat visiting Jacksonville 23-20 in overtime last week – maybe it’s a Florida thing? Against the Jags, Bilal Powell rushed 21 times for a career-high 163 yards and one touchdown, and caught 4-of-5 targets for 27 yards. His 75-yard touchdown was the Jets’ longest since 1983. Elijah McGuire rushed 10 times for 93 yards and one touchdown, and caught 2-of-2 targets for 38 yards against the Jaguars in Week 4. McGuire and Powell got plenty of work because Forte is week to week with a toe injury. McCown completed 22-of-31 passes for 224 yards and one interception vs. Jacksonville. McCown also had a fumble returned for a touchdown on a foolish backwards pass. DE Kony Ealy led all defenders in Week 4 with a career-high 10.5% disrupted dropback percentage, easily eclipsing his previous high of 5.7%. Ealy, who had five career batted passes before Sunday, recorded three against the Jaguars. (He was credited with four on the press-box stats) The Patriots, who cut Ealy on Aug. 26, have one batted pass as a team. Ealy did it with a heavy heart, as he lost a sister last week. He was awarded the game ball in an emotional post-game moment. “I think it helped him a lot to cope with things,” Coach Todd Bowles said. Since rookie safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye have hit the field, they’ve impressed their coaches and teammates with their play and approach to the game. The rookie duo has combined for 35 tackles through four weeks of the regular season and played with a tangible energy.

Why Bet On Cleveland?

Well, it’s unlikely the Browns will go 0-16 and if they win, it should be at home. But this team is 2-29 dating to the 2015 season. That record matches the worst record in NFL history over a 31-game span. Only the Houston Oilers (1972-74 and 1982-84) and the Detroit Lions (several times, most recently 2007-09 and 2008-10) have also had a 2-29 mark over 31 games, a win-loss percentage of .065. The team is 1-9 under Coach Hue Jackson. Only John McKay had a worse first 20 games in his NFL career. McKay lost his first 26 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976-77. Phil Handler of the Chicago Cardinals also went 1-19 to begin his career (1943-45), and Harvey Johnson of the Bills went 1-18-1 (1968 and ’71) — though both had qualifiers. Are the Browns a safe bet in Week 5? Cleveland comes off a 31-7 defeat at home to Cincinnati. The Browns avoided a shutout with 1:54 left. The Browns were again without top pick Myles Garrett. The defensive end is dealing with an ankle injury and the team is being cautious. Garrett was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain Sept. 7, one day after he was hurt during Cleveland’s first full practice leading to its season opener. He might play here. The Browns were also missing starting outside linebacker Jamie Collins (concussion) and massive tackle Danny Shelton (calf) vs. Cincinnati. Jackson insists he still has “total confidence” in rookie QB DeShone Kizer. “He’s truly gotten better over the last four weeks,” Jackson said this week. “We have to support him every way we can.” Against the Bengals, Kizer completed 16-of-34 passes for 118 scoreless yards before being benched. Duke Johnson caught 9-of-10 targets for 47 yards while rushing four times for 13 yards and a touchdown.

Expert NFL Betting Prediction

Although the NY Jets are looking way better than Cleveland, I’m taking the Browns here as the NFL betting pick – this is probably their best shot to avoid 0-16 and they’ll play like it. I know, it might be crazy to choose them, but I have a good feeling about this one. It’s not like the Jets have been making miracles, but they’ve done well, still a bit inconsistent.
