Packers Are Underdogs Against the Cowboys in the NFL Week 5 Lines

Written by on October 6, 2017

The marquee matchup of Week 5 is pretty clearly a late Sunday afternoon game from Dallas as the defending NFC East champion Cowboys host the defending NFC North champion Packers in rematch from a terrific playoff game last season. The Cowboys are slight NFL Week 5 lines favorites, but things can turn into the Packers favor. So it wouldn’t be strange to see the NFL odds for Week 5 shift a little before the game kicks off.

Series History

Including the playoffs, it will be the fifth straight season the Packers and Cowboys have met. Green Bay leads the regular-season series with Dallas, 14-13, while the two teams have each won four games against each other in the postseason. The teams split two matchups last season, with Dallas winning at Green Bay during the regular season and the Packers winning at Dallas in the Divisional playoffs. Green Bay has won six of the last seven games it has played against the Cowboys in the regular and postseason, including two at Dallas. Out of the last 14 regular-season meetings between the two, 13 have been decided by double digits. The one contest that wasn’t was a 37-36 Green Bay victory in 2013, the last time the Packers played at Dallas in the regular season.

Why Bet On Green Bay?

The Packers (3-1) are on extra rest after clobbering the Bears 35-14 last Thursday. Aaron Rodgers threw four TD passes, two to Jordy Nelson. Rodgers has 10 TD passes on the year, tied for the most with Tom Brady. Five of those have gone to Nelson. Green Bay entered that game missing a handful of starters due to injury and saw WR Davante Adams leave the field on a stretcher after getting hit in the head during a tackle by Danny Trevathan in the third quarter. Running back Ty Montgomery was knocked out in the first quarter with a chest injury. Backup Jamaal Williams also left. As of this writing, it’s not clear if Adams or Montgomery will play. Both had been limited in practices this week through Thursday. Williams will play, but fellow rookie Aaron Jones may get the start. The first time he touched the football on Thursday, he gained 4 yards and was off and running. He carried 13 times in two-plus quarters and gained 49 yards. His first NFL touchdown came on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. There’s great injury news in that offensive tackles David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga both were in pads on Thursday. Bakhtiari and Bulaga have yet to play a snap together this season, and Rodgers has been sacked 15 times, third most in the NFL. Dating back to 2006, the Packers (30-11, .732) hold the second-best winning percentage in the month of October behind the New England Patriots (39-8, .830).

Why Bet On Dallas?

The Cowboys were upset 35-30 at home last week by the Rams. Terrance Williams dropped a potential tying 2-point conversion pass on the third try midway through the fourth quarter after Dak Prescott’s 28-yard scoring toss to James Hanna. Prescott was 20 of 36 for 252 yards with three touchdowns. Ezekiel Elliott had 85 yards on 21 carries and backup Alfred Morris finished with 76 — 70 coming on his career-long run to set up Elliott’s second TD. The Cowboys are expecting the return of defensive lineman David Irving to the team this week. Irving was suspended four games by the NFL for performance-enhancing drugs. In last year’s regular-season meeting with the Packers, Irving was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after he forced three fumbles, sacked Aaron Rodgers and had a tackle for a loss and a pass deflection. In the playoff loss to Green Bay he had two pressures. Are the Cowboys a safe betting pick in NFL Week 5? Linebacker Anthony Hitchens has missed the first four games because of a tibial plateau fracture but might play. Fellow LB Sean Lee could return from a one-game absence because of a hamstring injury. Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie could be back from a two-game absence because of a hamstring strain. Could Elliott miss this game? Not likely, but the NFL expects a decision in the Elliott case “soon.” The NFL is seeking a stay on the injunction which is allowing Elliott to continue playing while his suit against the league is litigated. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans heard oral arguments on Monday, and could issue a ruling this week.

Expert NFL Week 5 Lines Pick & Prediction

I like the total here – over – better than the side, but believe Dallas gets payback for that crushing home playoff loss. So, I would definitely put my money on the NFL Week 5 lines for the Cowboys.
